Ian trained as a chef at Le Talbooth restaurant in Suffolk England and has a real passion for food, this was one of the deciding factors in moving his family to the Dordogne, which is renowned as the gastronomic capital of France. The Perigord Noir is famous for its fois gras, truffles, confit de canard, walnuts, geese, magret de canard, cabecou goat cheese, cepes, sanglier, venison, escargot etc

The day begins at 10am with the participants meeting each other over a welcome drink and an introduction to our amazing regional ingredients, then it’s into the outdoor kitchen to start preparing lunch. We are delighted to offer culinary courses throughout the year between April and October.

I had a message sent to me in reply to our recent post offering people the amazing opportunity to join us for a “WORKING HOLIDAY” in the beautiful Dordogne.
The message basically accused us of looking for “Slave Labour” Slave labour? that seems a little harsh. We like to call it enthusiastic exploitation and it’s a bit of a dramatic way of describing being asked to do something useful. Granted it is an unpaid opportunity with very limited prospects but the tea breaks can be overly generous and on occasion include biscuits.🤷🏻‍♂️
Picture is from a recent group of willing participants. 🤥

🥳🥳BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND🥳🥳
We are approaching the end of our 2026 season and are now getting ready to close down for our "off" season and to set off again for some exploring.
A few people asked if we were going to offer another working holiday experience during 2026; Well you lucky people, YES WE ARE!

We are offering lovely accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner, wine, local airport and train transfers, good laugh and fresh air, in return for gardening, grass cutting, doing stuff with shrubs and trees, pool cleaning and general storing away, you get the picture.

The dates for this Dordogne adventure are any 3 days or more you can help between the 18th and 28th of Ocober 2026. We are looking for a limited group (6 to 8 people) who are physically fit and willing to help us, mostly in the garden. If you’re not sure and want an unbiased opinion you can always drop a line to a few of our previous participants.

If you require any further information just drop us a line.
Looking forward to meeting old friends and making new ones.
Ian & Sara xx

Don’t just visit the Dordogne. Taste it. 🇫🇷

You can spend a day sightseeing in the Dordogne.

Or you can spend a day discovering what makes this extraordinary region taste so good.

At CookDordogne, our hands-on regional cookery experiences are all about getting beneath the surface of French food.

We use fresh, seasonal ingredients and the incredible produce of the Périgord.

You’ll learn about the ingredients, discover traditional cooking techniques, cook alongside Chef Ian and, most importantly…

sit down afterwards and enjoy what you’ve made.

It’s relaxed.

It’s fun.

It’s very French.

And you don’t need to be an experienced cook.

You just need to enjoy good food.

Come and cook with us in the Dordogne.

Cook. Eat. Laugh. Discover.

That’s CookDordogne.

ITS NEVER JUST ABOUT THE FOOD…..

Some of our guests arrive convinced they “can’t cook.”

A few hours later they’re confidently preparing French classics using wonderful local ingredients from the Dordogne.

Then they sit down together, open another bottle of wine, and enjoy the best part of the day sharing the meal they’ve created together.

That’s what CookDordogne is all about.

Learning.

Laughing.

Making friends.

And taking home memories that last far longer than the holiday.

Who’d like to join us next time?

Back in 1983 I started working at Le Talbooth Restaurant in Dedham as a Commi chef. It’s still there and it’s still beautiful.
The guy in the other picture was my Sous chef Roger. He helped my through the craziness of a top end kitchen and there’s no way I would have survived without him. He came to help me with a Martin Walker event in April 2026. We’ve been mates for 43 years.
Thanks Badger
