17 Mosaic patterns of Pont-Chevron

Some people spend their lives searching for the meaning of life.
Others search for Atlantis.
As for me, I am trying to figure out how a 2nd-century Gallo-Roman mosaicist managed to fill a floor with 35 geometric patterns without going mad.
The Pont-Chevron mosaic is a remarkable example of that Roman obsession with decorating floors—a task requiring a level of patience that would make a modern-day tiler look like a Zen monk. At first glance, the design appears dauntingly complex. In reality, it relies on a limited vocabulary: a few shapes—repeated, combined, flipped, and interlocked. In short, it is geometry for people who had plenty of time on their hands and hadn't yet invented Sudoku.
I have therefore isolated and redrawn the 17 patterns that make up the pavement. Here are a few of them. The goal is not to claim that the Romans discovered abstract art before anyone else. What they had discovered, above all, was that a good catalog of basic geometric patterns allowed them to cover a vast surface area without having to depict a dying wild boar.

I have been spent over 10 hours online trying to salvage my mosaic-blues.com website. Some guys hacked it and are using it to advertise online gambling and god knows what other absurdities in various languages.
These guys know what they are doing, it is a total mess, you remove one malicious piece of software, within 2 minutes , it has been reinstalled. I hope I can figure out something, with the help of AI. If not, I might have to drop the site and rebuild a new one from scratch. I am not ready for this...

I've started a new little experiment with MosaicBlues.

I'm currently researching and writing a travel guide to the Roman mosaics of Gaul. It's turning into a rather large archaeological rabbit hole — old books, forgotten mosaics, obscure references, museums, journeys… and, naturally, the occasional good lunch.

I've created a Ko-fi page where I'll share some of the discoveries and the progress of the project.

This 11th chapter of my guide of Roman mosaics in Gaul explores the Roman mosaics of Metz, from the prosperous city of Divodurum Mediomatricorum to the surviving pavements preserved at the Musée de la Cour d’Or. It presents the principal mosaics on display, including the remarkable Birds Mosaic and Gladiators Mosaic, as well as two important pavements that have disappeared but survive through 18th-century engravings. Alongside the mosaics, the guide offers an accessible introduction to Roman Metz, its history and daily life, together with practical information for visitors, local gastronomy, and other Roman sites worth discovering in the surrounding region. Two additional notes provide a closer look at gladiatorial combat between retiarii and secutores, and at the pelta, a decorative motif whose origins lie in the ancient battlefield.

Foundry is a second line of activity at MosaicBlues. I don't advertize it too much for I am still learning the trade. I had some outstanding Foundry teachers 50 years ago... I joined a foundry club in 2022.
We are casting aluminum, Brass, and Bronze, In sand, and lost wax molds. Next fall, I am going to experiment casting bronze in a fire resistant concrete mold (the black one at the bottom).
And casting wax in a plaster mold.
