End of the first semester! On December 14, we finished the first semester of Hautecombe Discipleship School (HDS1) ✨ It was a unique time of formation, building relationships, and discovering what community really means 🤍

We learned to be together — in daily life, in conversation, in prayer, and in everyday support 🙏

With gratitude for what is already behind us and with hope, we move forward to the next stage 🌿🤍

[ENG 🇬🇧]
Ten days ago, our first semester of training came to an end!📚⛪️ We asked a few young people what they had discovered, explored in depth, and what they wanted to take away from these few weeks at Hautecombe Abbey! ✨

So, HDS1, what do you take away from it?

🧍‍♂️Above all, God’s love—especially through inner healing, through learning to love myself, and through encounters with everyone else in the cohort.

🧍🏼‍♀️ I have started living my life in Christ. And not just with Christ, I think, in asking help for everything and going back to Scripture.

🧍🏼‍♀️Fraternity—the support of truly having people praying for me, carrying me, and helping me in more difficult moments.

🧍🏼‍♀️I learned to love others better, to love myself better, and to love God better.

🧍🏼‍♀️What changed most is the way I see Christ and how much I want to make Him my priority.

🧍🏼‍♀️First semester of HDS is really understanding God beyond the language. Learning and understanding God in ways that I didn’t expect that it’s possible. 🧍🏼‍♀️ I realized that our time of work, of being together, is often even more time of praying, of being in presence of the Lord.

❤️In the end, it’s all about love.

🇫🇷 Dernier dimanche de l’Avent — AMOUR

🤲💜 Le dernier dimanche de l’Avent
est un temps pour s’arrêter,
juste avant l’essentiel.
Un moment pour clôturer l’Avent
— non pas par davantage d’actions,
mais par l’attention. 🫂

[ENG] 🇬🇧 Fourth Sunday of Advent — LOVE

💜🤲 The last Sunday of Advent
is a moment to pause, 🫂
just before what matters most.
A time to bring Advent to a close
— not through more activity,
but through attentiveness.
To the people around us,
to what we have lived
over these past weeks,
and to the celebration
that is already very near.

Advent leads us to Bethlehem 🪔
— to a God who chooses closeness over power, fragility over great signs, relationship over distance.
It teaches us that true love does not dominate,
but allows itself to be encountered.

Love matures along the way.
In community life, in prayer,
formation and mission.
In the small, daily choices we make.

✨ Quotes from our students ✨

💛 “Love = happiness + suffering”
~ Father Hasso

“We receive more happiness by giving and by giving ourselves. Love always asks for a small step beyond ourselves.”

❤️ “Everything begins with love.
Out of love, God created us,
so that we might love Him in return
and love one another.

🌍 Without love, nothing works.
From love flow charity, good works,
care for others, listening, and
understanding the needs of another.

Without love, we would live only for ourselves.”

🙏 “To love is to strive with all one’s heart
to become like Christ.
It is to become as small and humble
as Jesus in the manger.

✝️ Christ is the living example of love:
a life offered, given for us.”

For the final week of classes and the conclusion of the first semester of the Hautecombe Discipleship School, we had the privilege of being taught by Henk Stoorvogel, a former pastor and evangelistic author, who came from the Netherlands to enlighten us on the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. 🔥📖

He reminded us how foundational and essential the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts are for being disciples of Christ in the world.

So the writer that wrote most of the New Testament is not Paul, but Luke. He wrote only two books, but they are almost a third of the whole New Testament.

So he is important. And he did a lot of good research to create a history of the life of Jesus and a history of the origin of the church and world mission.

So how did the story go from Jesus to a first group of followers to a movement that changed the whole known world? Founded hospitals and schools and institutions to go for the poor.

That has to do with the picture of Jesus in Luke as the liberator. He brings joy.

Do you want to know joy? Just read Luke and act.

✧ 3rd Week of Advent — JOY 🌟

The 3rd week of Advent is dedicated to joy.
It begins with Gaudete Sunday.

Joy is much more than an emotion.
It is an attitude of the heart.
An openness to God and to others.
It is sharing what we are truly living.
It is thanksgiving and praise. 🙏🏼

🫂 Joy begins when we allow ourselves
to see the good that is already present.
Here and now. In the little things. In shared life.

In our daily lives, joy is born when we share life in community, in simple conversations, in accompaniment, over a cup of coffee. When we give thanks — even when the road is not easy. When we learn to recognise the small signs of goodness.

Advent reminds us that joy is not a reward at the end of the journey. It is a sign that we are moving in the right direction. ✝️

🧍🏼‍♀️: For me, the joy of Advent is… being open and sharing with others what we are living. It is giving thanks. It is praising the Lord and recognising His work in our lives. It is learning to see the goodness of God.

08/12/2025

🌐Laudato si’ — pour honorer la délicatesse du monde et celle de notre prochain ;
🫂La vie communautaire — pour rester proches même quand c’est difficile ;
🙏🏼La prière — pour demander la paix et l’unité que nous ne savons pas construire seuls ;
📖La formation — pour comprendre au lieu de juger ;

________
[ENG 🇬🇧]
Peace does not begin with big decisions or ideal conditions. It is not a state where everyone thinks in the same way, nor is it the absence of conflict.
Peace is born when I look at a person and desire their good — even when it is difficult.

We live together, we pray, we are formed, we talk, we disagree—and in all of this we learn that the other is a mystery, not an obstacle.
Our pillars remind us of this every day:
🌐 Laudato si’— to honour the tenderness of creation and of our neighbour;
🫂 Community life — to remain close even when it is difficult;
🙏🏼 Prayer — to ask for the peace and unity we cannot create on our own;
📖 Formation — to understand rather than judge;
🛫 Mission — to bring hope, to learn to give ourselves and to receive from others.

Peace also has a missionary dimension. On the second Sunday of Advent, we celebrated the sending Mass of our JET volunteers who are leaving for mission countries. We know they are not going there with the idea of “changing the world”, but they carry what we learn here: attention, presence, listening and gentle care. Because true peace is born from encounter —
and can only be spread through encounter.

🧍‍♂️Formation participant:
“Peace is like a bridge.
It is built slowly — through words, perseverance and forgiveness, step by step, above the gaps of differences, languages and histories. JET is the continuation of this bridge. When we send someone far away — into another culture, another world — we hope they go as someone who connects rather than divides, someone who sees the person rather than the label, someone who knows how to listen rather than impose.”

🧍🏼‍♀️Formation participant:
“Peace is born in the small gestures we choose every day: in a word spoken with gentleness,
in listening before answering,
in letting go of ‘I am right’,
and in reconciliation.
Peace begins now.
Not ‘somewhere else’, but right where we are,
where love meets our diversity.”

A week ago, the young people of HDS returned from their silent retreat based on the exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Prayer, teachings, discernment... a special time to listen to the Lord and surrender our lives to him. Some of them share with us the fruits of their retreat! 🙏

🧍‍♀️🇮🇹 Isabella: It's understanding that God truly wants joy and happiness for me, and so no matter where I am with the Lord, that's my home and that's where happiness is.
🧍🏽‍♀️🇨🇵 Anne-Lys: Stop doing the Lord's work, be my work.
🧍‍♂️🇨🇵 Paul: It's rediscovering and deepening a little bit the love of God, the reality and presence of that love.
🧍🏾‍♀️🇲🇺 Alessia: I have rediscovered the joy of wonder, of becoming a little like a child again, of being happy with the Lord, and that's it.

Chaque jour. À nouveau. Dans les petites choses.

[🇺🇲] Advent — HOPE

Hope does not come to us through big speeches.
It is born in the simplicity of everyday life: in conversations at the table, in shared work and prayer, in a quiet “sorry” whispered during Tuesday Mass, and in a smile after reconciliation.

Here, in our ordinary daily rhythm, we discover that hope is not a feeling, but a choice: a decision to love, to listen, and to accompany one another.

We live together, even though we are different.
The abbey is home to 21 nationalities and 67 stories. It is precisely this diversity that teaches us peace, tenderness, and welcome.
Because unity is not born from uniformity, but from love that patiently listens.

Community life, mission, formation, and prayer remind us that hope is born when we are not alone.

“This value means a lot to me, because it shows us the way to keep growing. It touches me especially now, as I am going through a difficult time, but it helps me remain faithful to Christ.”
— formation participant

We learn that the “Waiting” of Advent means seeing further and trusting deeper.
It is discovering that “ours” is more important than “mine”, that the other person is a gift, even when we do not agree, and that the heart matures within relationship.

Every day, we discover that community does not build itself: it grows from patience, understanding, and the decision to stay close.

For hope is born between us.
Every day. Anew. In the little things.

Qui est vraiment Jesus Christ ? ✝️

___
[ENG] 🇺🇲 Who is Jesus Christ really? ✝️

Father Hasso Beyer came to teach us Christology, particularly the mystery of Christ as True Man/True God.

[TRANSCRIPTION]
He is the Son of God, who is true God and true man.

He is someone who wanted to share our entire humanity with us, with all that is wonderful, all that is great, with all the beauty of this world, of creation, but also with all our suffering and difficulties.

And he truly wants to live in us, with us.

He himself says that it was necessary, which means that we will never have an adequate answer.

Sin, evil, is what causes suffering. One thing is certain: he did not want to leave us alone in this suffering.

It is as if Jesus had to suffer in order to overcome evil in this world, to show that love can overcome everything.
