Decency always wins in the long run.

On October 16, 1968, the world watched something it had never seen before.
American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos stood on the Olympic podium in Mexico City after finishing first and third in the 200-meter race. As the national anthem began, each raised a black-gloved fist into the air, heads bowed in silent protest against racial injustice at home.
They wore no shoes. Just black socks to represent poverty in Black America. Smith wore a black scarf for Black pride. Carlos wore beads for those who had been lynched without so much as a prayer.
But between them stood someone most people overlook.
Peter Norman, the silver medalist from Australia, asked them before the ceremony what they planned to do. When they told him, he asked a simple question: "Do you have something I can wear? I believe in what you believe."
They gave him an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge. He pinned it to his chest and stood beside them in solidarity as the boos rained down.
Within forty-eight hours, Smith and Carlos were expelled from the Games and sent home. They faced death threats, ostracism, and years of struggle. Norman returned to Australia and faced his own backlash. Though he had run the race of his life, breaking the Australian record with a time that still stands today, he never competed in another Olympics.
He refused, for the rest of his life, to condemn what they had done together.
When Norman died in 2006, Tommie Smith and John Carlos flew across the world to be pallbearers at his funeral.
Three men. Two raised fists. One act of quiet, unshakeable solidarity that changed the world.
