👋 The EAIE 2026 Conference comes to an end!

From 8–11 September in Glasgow, IAU Secretary General Hilligje van’t Land and Internationalization Manager Giorgio Marinoni joined over 7,300 education leaders and practitioners from 107 countries at the 36th Annual Conference of the EAIE European Association for International Education.

The IAU contributed to sessions on mobility, transnational partnerships and empowering changemakers, while connecting with partners and networks across Scotland to advance responsible internationalization and institutional solidarity.

A highlight was the 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗔𝗨-𝗘𝗔𝗜𝗘 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲, co-organized with EAIE and hosted by the University of Strathclyde. Bringing together 25 Vice-Rectors and senior internationalization leaders, the interactive dialogue explored how institutions can navigate cross-border partnerships while upholding academic freedom and equitable collaboration.

💭How can internationalization in higher education adapt to in a changing global context?

🎉The IAU is delighted to welcome two new interns to our offices in Paris!

Nada Gania is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Governance and Diplomacy at Sciences Po | PSIA. As the HESD and Communications intern, she supports data analysis and report writing for the 4th Global Survey on Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development. She also contributes to IAU’s communications activities, across its social media channels, website, and the Global Portal on HESD.

Malika Kussainova graduated from Eötvös Loránd University International with a Master’s degree in Educational Sciences. Working within the Higher Education and Internationalization team, she supports the coordination, analysis, and publication workflow of the 7th IAU Global Survey on Internationalization, as well as the implementation of the joint Master’s Programme with Mykolas Romeris University (MRU). She also assists with institutional intelligence through global membership mapping and university governance tracking.

Both Nada and Malika will be with us from September 2026 until January 2027. We look forward to working with them and wish them a successful internship!

The Global Citizenship Education Interview Series with Dr. Emiliano T. Bosio brings together scholars and practitioners from around the world to explore how global citizenship education can foster ethical values, social justice, sustainability, dignity, and inclusion.

On the episode marking the launch of the book "New Conversations on Global Citizenship Education: Plural Voices, Ethical Commitments, and Emerging Futures," Giorgio Marinoni (IAU HE and Internationalization Manager) discusses the relationship between internationalization and global citizenship education, building on his chapter contribution “Global Citizenship Education, Internationalization and the International Association of Universities.”

📚 How COVID-19 changed the internationalization of higher education: A scoping review of the literature and the field

As part of the Future of Internationalization Partnership Project (https://iau.global/past-internationalization-projects), the IAU worked with Boston College and the University of Toronto to explore how internationalization is changing in response to global pressures. The project also informed a module in the 6th IAU Global Survey on Internationalization, which focused on external pressures affecting institutional internationalization.

The project’s final publication, a scoping review of 368 peer-reviewed articles, highlights how the pandemic disrupted cross-border mobility while accelerating digital and “internationalization at home” approaches. It also points to important gaps in how internationalization is researched and understood globally.

During the EAIE European Association for International Education (EAIE) Conference in Glasgow, IAU and Mykolas Romeris University Certified Agent (MRU) partners met to discuss the final stages in the development of the new programme Global Engagement and Internationalisation of Higher Education.

The programme will bring together international expertise and innovative approaches to higher education internationalisation. Applications will open in October—more information coming soon!

🗓️ Meet the IAU Secretary General at the MCU Anniversary Conference 2026

Hilligje van’t Land (IAU Secretary General) will join university leaders, scholars, policymakers and students at the 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗮 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, taking place 14–16 October at Mykolas Romeris University in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Under the theme “Beyond Resilience: Universities as Active Value-Driven Agents in a Changing World,” the conference will explore how universities can strengthen academic values, institutional autonomy and their responsibility to society.
