ANNOUNCEMENT 🌏

“The show is over”

It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to indefinitely postpone Kiwi Lindy Exchange.

We wish we could continue to run this amazing event, we loved running it so much! But events like this (with attendees jetting in from all over the planet) are no longer viable if we want to ensure a liveable planet for future generations.

Sounds dramatic hey?

OUR REASONING
To limit global heating to below 2 degrees (which is our best bet for averting irreversible tipping points & runaway climate change, and was agreed to internationally in the Paris Climate Agreement 2015) each of us needs to be producing no more than ~2000kg CO2 per year by 2030.

Just to give you context, flying from Perth to Auckland emits 946kg of CO2 (one way) per person.

Which means Kiwi Lindy Exchange would likely exceed the yearly carbon budget for each individual attendee (depending on where they’re coming from).

And sure we could try and do some clever accounting and offsets, 'buying' ourselves slightly more time. But the science is pretty clear, we cannot offset our way out of this and technology will not save us in time. We each need to dramatically cut our CO2 output and adopt low carbon lifestyles, while also continuing to put pressure on big polluters, our employers and government.

Climate change isn’t fair but we still have a chance to create a liveable future. And yes we believe dance will be more important than ever in building community resilience. So instead of big international events let's focus on building our local dance scenes and be content with learning and connecting with others online.

This is a challenge we all face and we need to be supporting each other through this big upheaval. Too little has been done to date, which means drastic changes in our lifestyles are now inevitable whether we like it or not.

You and me, (us)...we're not responsible for this mess. But collectively we are responsible for what happens next and every little change we make adds up.

Exclusion Is Oppression: From Pedagogy to Performance 15/11/2020

Important

Exclusion Is Oppression: From Pedagogy to Performance Colonialism and slavery violently disrupted the histories of Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC). White folks appointed themselves tellers of all stories, and their viewpoints have rewritten, erased or entirely excluded other narratives. BIPOC dance artists have, for long, felt this exclus...
