Looking back at the 2025–26 academic year, it’s hard to overstate how much ground this community covered. As we close out July and get ready to turn the page toward fall orientation, we wanted to pause and reminisce on some of the moments that defined the year.

🇫🇷 There’s learning French from a textbook, and then there’s learning French by ordering your afternoon café au lait, getting lost in translation on the way to class, and spending weekends exploring towns just outside of the city.

Our French Immersion students have spent this summer using Paris as their classroom. Just small groups, native teachers, and the best city in the world to practice in.

Soy sauce as strategy. Milk as politics. A ritual meal as resistance.

Last month, The American University of Paris hosted "Transatlantic Dialogues on Food, Culture & Power," a day-long gathering of scholars from across France, the US, and beyond, digging into how food shapes identity, memory, and power. Highlights included the global politics of artisanal soy sauce, the history of milk digestion, and a participatory performance confronting cultural erasure through taste.

Organized by Mathilde Cohen (CNRS) and AUP's own Christy Shields, in partnership with Université Paris Nanterre and the CNRS-CTAD.

The Statue of Liberty has stood in New York Harbor since 1886, a gift from France, with a torch its creators said lights the way to knowledge. This smaller replica on the Seine echoes that message across the Atlantic.

AUP carries that torch too, cultivating critical thinkers who engage with global challenges and take their places as responsible actors in the world. That commitment to academic rigor, global citizenship, and a world held in common is what the university has been built around for over 60 years.
