When you’re a high school senior trying to compress 17 years of life, identity, and ambition into exactly 650 words, it’s incredibly easy to get stuck in your own head.

I see students stumble into two common traps:

Staying on top of key application deadlines can make all the difference.

📌 Top 3 deadlines to remember:

🗓️ Early Action / Early Decision – Typically 1 November
Applying early can demonstrate strong interest and may mean receiving an admissions decision sooner.

🗓️ Regular Decision – Typically 1 January
This is the most common application deadline for many US universities. Don't wait until the last minute!

🗓️ Financial Aid (FAFSA & Scholarship Applications) – Submit as early as possible once applications open
Applying early can improve your chances of receiving financial aid and scholarships.

Admissions officers can spot a ChatGPT essay in about three seconds.

It’s completely understandable why students are tempted to use AI. The college essay prompt is staring at you, the blinking cursor is mocking you, and plugging a prompt into ChatGPT gives you a clean, organized draft in under a minute.

But here’s the catch: selective colleges aren’t looking for a flawless, algorithmically perfect essay. They’re looking for you.

AI relies on predictable structures and predictable words. (If your essay contains phrases like "delve into," "a testament to," or "multifaceted," an admissions officer's AI radar is immediately going to go off). When a reader is going through their 50th application of the day, a generic, sterile essay is a quick ticket to the pile of missed opportunities.

The best way to stand out is to be undeniably, uniquely human. Your essay should sound like an insightful 17- or 18-year-old with a real story to tell, not a robot trying to sound sophisticated.
