Memorial Day often marks the unofficial start of summer long weekends, gatherings, and time with family.
But at its core, this day carries a much deeper meaning.
Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. It’s a moment to pause, reflect, and recognize the sacrifices made by individuals and the families who continue to carry that loss.
For students and families, it can also be a powerful opportunity to have conversations about service, perspective, and gratitude values that extend far beyond the classroom or the college process.
As we move through the weekend, I always encourage taking a moment, however small, to acknowledge the true purpose of the day.
Because remembering matters.
How are you taking time to reflect this Memorial Day?

Mother’s Day always brings a mix of gratitude and reflection for me.
My mother has been gone for over 20 years, but her voice and her expectations have never really left. I’m the youngest of five, and while we’re all different, we were raised with the same simple, steady foundation.
Mama believed manners go a long way. Be polite. Be kind. Be thoughtful. It sounds basic, but it shapes how you move through the world and how the world responds to you.
She believed in the connectedness of family. If you know me or my siblings, you know we’re there for each other in the good times and the hard ones, and when something needs to be accomplished, we operate like a well-oiled machine.
She also had style and a keen eye for fashion, including an appreciation for a great sale. To this day, my sisters and I consider shopping a pastime, and securing a good deal a legitimate accomplishment.
And perhaps most importantly, she believed one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child is the ability to be a responsible adult who contributes something positive to the world around them.
Her expectations were always clear: act right, be humble, do things correctly and do them well. There were no long lectures, just a quiet grace and a mother’s love.
I find myself coming back to these lessons often in my work, in my relationships, in my parenting, and yes, in my shopping. I remain grateful for her, always.
Happy Mothers Day.
