Ayurvedic Yoga Massage - ARYM Institute

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage - ARYM Institute Original AYM-ARYM Institute founded in 1996 by Kusum Modak’s main collaborator, Ananta Sylvain Girard

Since 1996, the ARYM Institute of Ayurvedic Yoga Massage has been dedicated to teaching AYM (Kusum Modak method of Ayurvedic Yoga Massage). A pioneer in its field, Ananta Sylvain Girard is the founder of the ARYM Institute in Mysore. He is the senior assistant and direct collaborator of the creator of the AYM method, Master Kusum Modak, with whom he taught the AYM Programme in Pune and Goa, India,

on several dozen training programmes between 1996 and 2002. Since then, Ananta has offered over 250 AYM training courses to thousands of students worldwide. ABOUT AYM
Ayurvedic Yoga Massage is a comprehensive Dynamic Yogic Bodywork that combines elements of deep tissue massage therapy, yoga-based assisted stretching (passive yoga), and breathwork into one treatment.

The massage therapy is performed on a mattress on the floor and typically takes between 50 and 90 minutes. Although rooted in the tradition of Indian massage, AYM differs from other traditional Ayurvedic massages, particularly in its yoga-based assisted stretches, which form the core of the method and set it apart from others. In addition, unlike the famous Ayurveda oily massage treatment called Abhyangam, just a tiny amount of oil is used to deliver Ayurvedic Yoga Massage. More importantly, the massage exfoliates as oil is applied with Calamus root powder using slow, deep massage strokes performed with the hands and feet. It is worth saying that the massage is tailor-made when adjusting the pressure and selecting the series of stretches to suit individual needs. The session provides a deep sense of openness and well-being on a physical, psychological and emotional level. Kusum Modak successfully combined both traditional Indian Deep Tissue Massage and Yoga Therapies based on the BKS Iyengar Yoga. THE ORIGINS OF AYURVEDIC YOGA MASSAGE (AYM)
Master Kusum Modak developed the original AYM method in Pune in the early 1980s. She was greatly influenced by her two gurus (teachers): BKS Iyengar and Vasudev Limaye. Her legendary yoga teacher BKS Iyengar was a world-renowned expert in Hatha yoga with precise, clever alignments and pranayama (breathing techniques). The second, Vasudev Limaye, was a local massage therapist that came from a family practising traditional Ayurvedic massage therapy for charitable purposes for many generations. Thus Kusum’s massage practice evolved naturally into Ayurvedic Yoga Massage, an all in one bodywork combining the therapeutic tradition of Indian massage with beneficial stretching and alignment of Iyengar yoga. Over the next 35 years, Kusum has continued developing and teaching the AYM method to worldwide students visiting India and during training courses held in Brazil, Italy, and the UK. Building on this lineage, AYM is taught by Ananta Sylvain Girard at the ARYM Institute.

August in Paris - Ayurvedic Yoga Massage Training 🇫🇷

We have just completed Part 1 of the ARYM Therapist Diploma training in Paris with a wonderful group of students.

Over the past days, they have learned the foundations of Ayurvedic Yoga Massage: deep tissue techniques, the first series of assisted stretches, body mechanics, pressure, positioning, and the art of listening through touch.

Now we move forward into Part 2, where the practice deepens and the journey continues with dozens of additional assisted yoga-based stretches, leading to the ARYM Therapist Diploma.

A beautiful group, a dedicated atmosphere, and many hands learning to care. We are also delighted to be teaching in our new training venue in Paris’s 14th arrondissement. 🙏

The next ARYM trainings will take place in Taipei, Taiwan, in November 2026 and January 2027, followed by Mysore, India, in February 2027.

The AYM training in France is complete. What a wonderful June in Paris.

The heat was really something this week, still on, but the minds stayed fresh and the work we did together was beautiful. A group from all over the map: Canada, Bordeaux, Portugal, Norway, Marseille and even a few practitioners from Paris 🤣

The next Paris training will be held in August 22-30. Otherwise, you can join me in Taipei, Mysore, Barcelona, Bali, and probably soon in Norway.

Le prochain stage à Paris aura lieu en août. Sinon, vous pouvez me rejoindre à Taipei, Mysore, Barcelone, et bientôt en Norvège.

The protocol is the same. The treatment is not.
In Ayurvedic Yoga Massage, we work within a structured framework that guides the session from beginning to end.
Yet no two treatments are ever identical.
As we assess the body, feel the tissues, observe movement patterns and listen to the breath, the work naturally adapts.
One person may need more opening. Another may need more support and integration. One area may call for movement, another for stability.
The protocol remains the same. The way it is applied changes with every person, every session, every moment.
This is why Ayurvedic Yoga Massage is not only a full-sequence to memorise.
It is a conversation with the body. 🙏

ॐ Opening or Closing — Stretching or Strengthening?
In this carousel, I spoke about adapting the treatment to the individual rather than applying techniques mechanically. Here is one example.

When the costal arch is elevated and the base of the collarbone tips forward, when the breath stays perpetually open and the tissues have lost their capacity to recoil, the work may call for approximation (closing) rather than further opening.

Not every body needs more stretching and space. Some bodies need to learn how to come back. 🙏

A small group, an intimate week, one method ॐ

We completed Barcelona training. This one makes it 428 AYM Therapist Training Courses in over 30 years of transmitting the AYM method I learnt from my great teacher Kusum Modak.

The work has this beauty: I keep the same passion for transmitting it, body to body, heart to heart, soul to soul, generation after generation.

Nearly 3,000 AYM praticiens trained worldwide with me since 1996.

My courses are open to everyone, massage therapists, yoga teachers, and anyone called by the art of healing touch. All are welcomed to learn 🙏

I work with small groups, personal attention, share 30 years of transmission. You learn by doing, guided hand by hand.

Complete a full AYM Certificate, leave with the confidence to offer complete treatments, and a practice you can build a career on, right after your first course.

AYM is a unique treatment combining deep tissue oil massage, Ayurvedic Vacha root powder massage (Calamus), assisted yoga stretches and breath-guided touch.

ॐ A Rodeo Stretch to end the day, and a week training 🙏

My student Angelica has been carrying for five years a disc injury that healed on paper but never quite left her body.
This week, during our intensive AYM training in Barcelona, she came not only to learn but to experience. New skills, new awareness, and a deeper understanding of her own body’s boundaries. All week long she received yoga stretches particularly focused on disc decompression, each session building trust between her body and the work.
Today, something shifted and as she is feeling much better, I decided to move forward with the Rodeo, a slow rotational stretch, her legs supported by my knee, precise pressure where needed and none where not, releasing the pelvic girdle, the lumbar spine, and all the way up into the diaphragm. Her breath opened. Her body integrates.
Five years is a long time to hold something.
It is time to feel free, with awareness of the body 🙏
