Hey everyone! It’s Ruby, and here’s your ultimate AUP packing guide: What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home) ✈️🇫🇷

One of the biggest mistakes I made before moving to Paris? Overpacking.

Your AUP residence already comes equipped with many essentials, including:
🛏️ Bedding
🛁 Towels
🍳 Pots, pans, dishes, and kitchen supplies

Save that precious suitcase space for the things you actually need, and Paris is the shopping capitol of the world! Anything you forget, or don’t think about, you’ll be able to find here!

👕 Clothing

Pack enough to get you settled, not enough to last an entire year!

A good starting point:
• 5–8 everyday tops
• 3–4 sweaters
• 2–3 pairs of jeans or pants
• 1–2 pairs of shorts and/or skirts
• 2–3 nicer outfits
• Comfortable/athletic clothes
• Pajamas
• Socks and underwear
• A rain jacket, winter coat, and light jacket
• Sneakers
• Boots or one nicer pair of shoes
• Accessories

Don’t Forget!

✔️ Laptop (required for classes)
✔️ Passport and visa documents
✔️ Chargers with an EU plug (or a European adapter)
✔️ Reusable water bottle
✔️ Contact lenses (bring at least a month’s supply if you use them)
✔️ Prescription medications (bring at least a month’s supply)
✔️ School bag — I quickly noticed many students in Paris carry large purses or stylish briefcases instead of traditional backpacks, so choose whatever fits your style!

🩷 Comfort Items

• Photos of family and friends
• Small decorations or keepsakes
• A favorite scarf (or a few!) — perfect for decorating your room and wearing around Paris

🚫 Leave These Behind

❌ Too many clothes
❌ Bedding and towels
❌ Pots, pans, dishes, and kitchen supplies
❌ School supplies (notebooks and pens are easy to buy here)
❌ Full-size toiletries (you can find everything you need once you arrive)
❌ Hair tools or small appliances unless they’re essential (European voltage is different, and it’s often easier to buy them here)

Moving across the world can feel overwhelming, so do yourself a favor and don’t overcomplicate your life by lugging around things you don’t actually need.

One of my favorite ways to explore the city is with the Vélib’ bike-sharing system. Whether you’re heading to class, meeting friends, or discovering a new neighborhood, it’s a quick, affordable, and fun way to get around.

In this video, I’m breaking down how the Vélib’ pass works, how to get started, and why it’s a must-have for AUP students living in Paris.

Save this post for when you arrive in Paris, and let me know in the comments which mode of transport you prefer. And don’t forget to follow along for more “Roaming with Ruby” adventures around the city! 🚲✨

📍First up, we have Ruby!

“AUP was actually the only school I applied to. From the start, I was certain that Europe was where I wanted to be. Having grown up moving to a new country every 2-3 years, I’ve had many homes, and Europe felt like the perfect central hub connecting them all. After researching my options, I realized AUP was the ideal fit—an English-speaking university in Europe with a diverse community, the personal connection of small class sizes, and, let’s be honest, it’s Paris. Even after two years, this city still feels magical.

Another big draw was AUP’s generous scholarship for students completing the International Baccalaureate program. It not only helped convince my parents from a financial perspective but also reflected the type of globally minded, dedicated students AUP attracts, giving me a sense of the community I’d be joining.

I was also attracted to AUP’s liberal arts approach, especially since I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to study or do in life. While I’m still trying to figure out the “do in life” part, I have, however, settled on a major: Global Communications, which is a very popular choice here at AUP. The flexibility of the liberal arts model allowed me to explore my interests, especially since you only have to declare your major by the end of your sophomore year. I had considered applying to a few schools in London, but I was deterred by the idea of committing to a specific field of study right away.

In the end, I’m happy to say I made the right choice, so much so that my younger sister applied to AUP too!”
