and discussed findings from Reboot’s latest report “The TikTok Challenge: Curbing Social Media’s Influence On Young Minds.” The report found that 61% of TikTokers aged 13 to 24 would give up their voting rights for one year than their social media accounts for one year. What could this mean for the future of U.S. national security? How could we restore civic duty in the mindset of young Americans? Learn more about the discussion: https://buff.ly/45a8wCj.

Our new report “The TikTok Challenge: Curbing Social Media’s Influence On Young Minds” is live! We surveyed teens and adults in the U.S. on their usage habits, how the app influences their knowledge and beliefs, and what regulations they support. Here are some key takeaways:

🎯1 in 4 teen and young adult users are on the app for 4+ hours per day, and 56% said the app influences their beliefs in science, news and discoveries.

🎯 The more young people use social media, the more likely they are to find news on social media to be reliable. We found that frequent users are more open to junk sciences and are more likely to believe that the Earth is flat, or that astrology is a science.

🎯More than half of teen and young adult users would rather give up their voting rights for one year than lose access to all their social media.

Last week, our president Helen Lee Bouygues spoke with Jim Herlihy, host of the The San Francisco Experience, about the role of critical thinking in how we seek and gather information.

The majority of Americans get their news from social media sites like Tik Tok, Instagram, and Facebook rather than dedicated news sites like the BBC, The New York Times, and Bloomberg. In an increasingly digital world, we need to examine critically how the general public, especially younger generations, seek and assess information online. What are some common pitfalls in online use? How should parents and educators address the problem of digital overuse among children? Why is social media reform the necessary next step for the U.S.?

Why do we lack critical thinking skills? In the Harvard Business Review Guide to Critical Thinking, our founder and president Helen Lee Bouygues examines how the distractions in our everyday environment act as barriers to the development of critical thinking skills. For example, in seeking answers, we often rely on advanced technological tools instead of our own judgment. Read more & order the book here: https://buff.ly/3GU6pHp.
