Just like in French, each noun has its own grammatical gender. In Tibetan, each letter is traditionally classified into a different gender.

ས་ནི་འཇུག་པ་ཧ་ཅང་མང་བའི་ཡི་གེ་ཞིག་ཡིན། འདིར་ཁྱབ་ཆེ་བ་བཞི་ཡོད།
ས is one of the most productive Tibetan letters as it forms many different types of words. Here are four common examples.

Why is the Jack called a Jack? 🃏

Originally, this card was called the Knave (an archaic English word), meaning a young servant or attendant in a royal court. In the 19th century, it was renamed Jack to avoid confusion with the King, since both were often abbreviated with the letter K.

In Tibetan, we call the Jack བློན་པོ། (lönpo), which means minister. This reflects the card’s traditional role as a trusted official or adviser serving the king.
