This is the historic Hall of Mirrors located in the Palace of Versailles – it was here that the historic Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, putting a long-awaited end to the First World War. The space remains iconic, having also been featured in recent pop culture-dominating media such as The Summer I Turned Pretty and Olivia Rodrigo's 'Drop Dead' music video.

This is the iconic Canal Saint-Martin located in the 10th and the 11th arrondissements of Paris.

It was originally commissioned to be built by Napoleon in 1802, in an attempt to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases by providing citizens with clean drinking water.

Nowadays, the canal's purpose is much more leisure-oriented, uniting Parisians particularly in the summertime, when some are even brave enough to risk taking a dip!

The Tour de France 2026 concludes this weekend and you know what that means – it's time to brush up on our vocab!

'The Great Loop', as the French call it, will come to a close this Sunday at around 7:30pm along the Champs-Élysées.

So, keep your eye on the finish line to see who the 'yellow jersey' (winner) will be – and who will finish last (i.e. is the 'red lantern')

Pont Alexandre III – this impressive bridge connects the 7th and 8th arrondissements of Paris, and was named after Tsar Alexander III of Russia as a symbolic gesture of the Franco-Russian relationship.

Fun fact: the first stone was laid by the infamous Tsar Nicholas II in 1896!

The French equivalent of 'to mind one's own business' literally translates to 'looking after one's onions'!

It's a general rule that when a French noun ends with an 'e' (or, even better, an 'ée'), it's automatically feminine.

However, several words make an exception to the rule, like the 6 listed above – but why is this?

In fact, the origins of these words lie in the Latin ending '-eum' ─ which signalled the words' masculine or neuter gender. These ancient roots are why many of these words have a particularly old and dusty feel to them (museum, Colosseum, mausoleum...)

So, for anyone starting to feel a bit too confident in their French, take this post as a reminder to always double-check your 'le' and your 'la's.

Bastille Day, or la fête nationale, is a French holiday that commemorates when a group of insurgents stormed the Bastille, a medieval fortress and political prison, freeing all the inmates. This kick-started the French revolution in 1789 ─ 237 years ago tomorrow!

The anniversary is honoured all across France, such as with a military parade held along the Champs-Elysées in Paris, introduced by the President who arrives to inspect the troops. But the highlight of the holiday may well be tonight, when themed fireworks are set off over the Eiffel Tower!

This day is seen to mark the birth of democracy in France, with regular men and women having come together to protest against tyranny. It was a worthy cause then and is a wonderful reason to gather together to celebrate now!
