Parents, have you ever wondered why simple tasks like putting on shoes or brushing teeth can sometimes trigger meltdowns in your child?
Or why they seem to need help with tasks that you’re pretty sure they CAN DO FOR THEMSELVES?🤨🤨🤨
It’s called cumulative nervous system activation- let’s try and understand this using the sensory cup analogy: 🥤 🧠
Imagine your child's sensory system as a cup. 🥤
Throughout the day, their cup fills up with sensory input from activities, interactions, and the environment. ⬆️ ⬆️⬆️
Think of it as their "sensory cup" getting fuller and fuller.
Now, when you ask your child to put on their shoes or brush their teeth, it's like pouring more sensory input into their already full cup. Every task, action or movement involves sensory input.
Their nervous system, which is already stimulated, may become overwhelmed by this additional sensory demand.
Just like a cup overflowing when filled beyond its capacity, your child's sensory cup can overflow too. 🫗🫠
This can lead to meltdowns or strong reactions, not because they are being difficult, but because their nervous system is in OVERLOAD.
