A study conducted by researchers at the Reid School of Music in Edinburgh discovered that adults who sang in a new language, instead of just speaking it, performed better on language tests. If you love music, try singing in English – it's fun, boosts confidence, and you'll hear the correct way to pronounce new words. This young woman gives an incredible, confident version of the Sia song "Unstoppable". Find your favorite power song and have fun...in English!

Quand tu n'as pas envie de parler en anglais 🤨 😅
Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the fear of public speaking. The word glossophobia comes from the Greek γλῶσσα glossa, meaning tongue, and φόβος phobos, fear or dread.🙄

You may have observed these examples in daily life…a friend gets hired for a dream job, even though he doesn’t have all the qualifications. In meetings, a colleague always makes comments or suggestions that other people agree with. 🤨 How does this happen? According to research studies, the ‘secret sauce’ is self confidence!
We liked this article because it reflects the EnglishBooster approach (L'anglais augmenté) to successful communication: confidence + clarity + impact.
Key takeaways from the article:
- The natural result of under-confidence or insecurity is inaction or procrastination;
- Successful and fulfilled people always believe that they can improve and learn new things;
- Confidence and productivity require a growth mindset;
- When people are confident, they think they are good at something, regardless of how good they actually are.

Have you experienced this? In a meeting, someone starts talking…and doesn’t want to stop...it’s difficult for anyone else to express his or her ideas. 😴 Or maybe a group discussion is going off-track, into a new topic, and you need to take control of the meeting again. Maybe you’re on a conf call and looking at the clock…you have another meeting and really need to end this call. ⏳ How do you politely interrupt someone, in English?
Magic Phrases to the rescue! These phrases are an EnglishBooster speciality and can be used to add impact and confidence to your Business English. Try these phrases for a polite and effective way to assert yourself. You can customize the phrases to match your work situation.
Tame the dominant speaker: "(Name), I'd like to stop you for a moment to be sure I understand your points." Give a short summary of his or her input or ask a question. Then ask for input from other people in the meeting.
Someone is going off-topic: "(Name), could I stop you for a moment? That's great input but we need to focus on what’s happening with the current project. Do you have some feedback to share?"
Your call is too long: "Excuse me (name), I’m sorry to interrupt you. I just noticed the time and I’m committed to another meeting. We need to wrap up our call. If you need to provide more info, we could set up another quick call. Thanks a lot for your understanding."
Interrupting doesn’t equal rudeness, it’s a natural communication challenge. Just be polite and proactive! 👍

The end of the year is a good time to connect with people in your work life (colleagues, partners, suppliers…) and send a personalized message. 2021 was a difficult year for many people, so someone could really appreciate your email. “Happy holidays” or “Season’s greetings” is a friendly and inclusive word choice. If you are sure that your recipient celebrates Christmas, then use Merry Christmas (US) or Happy Christmas (Ireland and UK).
Do: Be professional and a kind human: add a sincere comment that shows thanks, appreciation or support.
Don’t: Use holiday messages to convey unrelated information, financial updates, or sales promotions.
Here are some ideas to inspire your message writing, they can be customized to fit your personal writing style and business relationships.
Start your message with a salutation of your choice.
It’s been great working with you in 2021 and I look forward to collaborating in the new year. Until then, I wish you a very good holiday season!
We solved some big challenges this year, thanks a lot for your support, I really appreciated our collaboration. Happy holidays (name), and I’m looking forward to working together in 2022.
I’m sending best (or warm) wishes for the holiday season, and for health, happiness and success in 2022.
Season’s greetings (name), I’m sending many good wishes for the holiday season and the coming year.
Do you have a good holiday message? Please share it.

If you are a human resource manager or employee training professional, this study published in the European Journal of Training and Development could be of interest: "Changes in the approach to employee development in organisations as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.” The study reveals trends that EnglishBooster has also observed in 2021.
Remote work and ongoing health and safety issues with COVID have impacted how companies previously managed employee development trainings. There’s been a strong move to outsource and use online training. More than ever, remote workers need a ‘lifeline’ to workplace normality and to feel a sense of personal and professional progress.
If you are planning a viable and dynamic learning solution for 2022 that includes Business English, EnglishBooster can create tailor-made training solutions that boost confidence and impact in presenting, leading, selling, writing, negotiating, or speaking in everyday business situations.

What is your motivation to become multilingual? If you don’t have a clear goal in mind (a ‘carrot') this can impact your progress. Sébastien Roger Nuñez, who is half French, half Argentine, discovered a passion for languages when he moved to Argentina. Very quickly, learning languages became a successful habit. In this short (13 min) TED Talk, Sébastien explains (in French) how identifying your carrot can motivate you to progress – no matter what your level is in a new language.

“My English isn’t very good.” But what does that really mean? At EnglishBooster, we frequently hear this comment, however it’s not an accurate way to assess your abilities in English. Our starting point is to recognize your strengths in English, and to identify the areas where you need extra help.
For example, you might easily communicate one-on-one with a colleague, but you feel uncomfortable speaking on the phone or in a meeting. We'll work to boost your confidence and presentation skills. When you are nervous, your voice doesn’t sound confident, and people have difficulty understanding you. Our trainers have solutions for that too!
We recommend workshops and tailor-made programs that are the right match for your specific learning objectives. For the past 20 years, EnglishBooster has been recognized for the excellence and high ROI of our training and coaching solutions by 100+ organizations in France and Europe. We’d like to put our experience to work for you!

Has this happened to you? You wrote an email to explain an issue or problem, adding useful background information. It was in Business English and took 15 minutes to write. You received a reply of just two sentences: “Thanks for the detailed info. I’ll get back to you.” Best, (name). Frustrating, isn’t it?
But the reality is, giving too much info can paralyze people’s decision-making response and reduces their motivation to respond. They will answer easier emails first.
Try this tip from the EnglishBooster training module EMAIL GENIE: What does the person really need to know? What info is needed for him/her to make a decision or take action? Be clear and concise – your first 2 sentences should summarize why you're writing. Add a few very short explanations (even bullet points). Make a call to action – what do you want to person to do? When? How? If they have questions, suggest a short follow-up call. Save yourself time AND boost your communication with colleagues, sales prospects, external suppliers, etc. 😀
