We will be launching the new conference tomorrow. All information will be posted about how to submit papers, presentations, ideas for performances or other. Interesting theme this year!
A belated thank you to everyone who made this conference happen! I had such a wonderful time and met so many inspiring people! Happy New Year to all!
For anyone who enjoyed my talk, this is the film I mentioned I'm working on. This link is to the crowdfunder if anyone would like to contribute, or simply share the link on their own pages. Cheers!

This is the film I was talking about in the uncut and subtitled version (you have to log in to youtube, for it is in the adult section):

Transgressive Cultures Conference taking place December in Paris TRANSGRESSIVE CULTURES CONFERENCE III
CALL FOR PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS
University of Chicago Center in Paris, 6 rue Thomas Mann, 75013 Paris, France

Conference Theme: Transgressive Saints

Dates: Wednesday, December 8th and Thursday, December 9th, 2021*

The image of the saint has long held a transgressive allure – the sacred grace and eroticism of Saint Sebastian, Jean-Paul Satre’s Saint Genet, q***r saints, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, even Muhammed Ali’s infamous 1968 cover of Esquire magazine.

[06/01/21]   It’s with deep regret that we have decided to postpone the Transgressive Cultures Conference for 2021. While we had hoped that the situation would have changed there remains too much uncertainty regarding travel and potential lockdowns. We’re hoping to run an event in 2022 and will be focusing on the same theme, so our call for papers will remain, but with a much extended deadline. We debated using Zoom, but so much of what matters to us all about the conference is creating a community, meeting people, developing friendships and seeing Paris, and we’d much rather run something in person. We hope to meet again and enjoy each other’s company in 2022.

[04/28/21]   Hi everyone. There's been a misunderstanding about the conference. It is essentially an academic conference where you present research or findings, art, performance or other around a theme, in a setting of supportive individuals who seek a deeper understanding of the conference's theme. There is, like most acadmic conferences, no fee paid to participants, nor do we cover travel, hotels, or per diems. This is your responsibility. I highly suggest that interested participants apply for grant or cultural funding from their arts councils or governmental arts grants agencies. This is what we are all doing in order to afford the expenses of attending.
Please feel free to ask us any question should you have them.

TRANSGRESSIVE CULTURES CONFERENCE III

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS

University of Chicago Center in Paris
6 rue Thomas Mann, 75013 Paris, France

Conference Theme: Transgressive Saints

Dates: Wednesday, December 8th and Thursday, December 9th, 2021*

The image of the saint has long held a transgressive allure – the sacred grace and eroticism of Saint Sebastian, Jean-Paul Sartre’s Saint Genet, q***r saints, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, even Muhammed Ali’s infamous 1968 cover of Esquire magazine. Alongside these figures there are those individuals and figures who become transgressive icons, whether through their art or actions, and who may take on a quasi-transcendent value.

For its third instalment the Transgressive Cultures Conference is looking for papers and presentations on Transgressive Saints. Papers on the representation and importance of saints, on the notion of godless spirituality, on saints and the cultural symbolism of saints, suggestions for alternative cannons, anti-religious saints, and the re-interpreted canon, are all encouraged.

Papers are also welcomed on the representation of alternative saints and religious transgressions in literature, music, and art: the literary Black Mass, the Diabolus in Musica / the Devil’s tritone, black metal, and unholy architecture, could all offer starting points.

We also invite papers on other areas of transgressive culture, philosophy, literature and creative practice.

We welcome proposals for alternative forms of presentation – short films, performance, readings etc – and contributions from creative practitioners, although such presentations must still fit into the general conference criteria and recognize the limitations of the conference space, unless otherwise agreed through prior discussion with the conference organizers.

Paper proposals should be no more than 300 words long. Final papers should be no more than 20 minutes in length. Please also tell us about yourself and your activities (a descriptive text, bio or CV).

Deadline for proposal submissions: OCTOBER 1st, 2021

Please send your proposals for papers, presentations, performances or other, to the conference organizers:

Jack Sargeant Email: [email protected]

Tom Garretson Email: [email protected]

* Please note that this date is tentative and based on the condition that the current situation with the Covid virus improves. Should Europe continue to be in lockdown mode because of the virus, then we will move the conference to 2022.

[11/28/20]   We had our first meeting regarding the conference for 2021, needless to say many ideas were flowing.

Watch this space for more information!

[11/26/20]   We are working now to set up a new conference next year sometime in the fall. We'll get back to you all with a new theme and other exciting news. Stay tuned!

A selection of images from this year’s event.

[12/08/19]   There was some talk about a book of the collected papers from this year’s conference. How seriously are people willing to engage with the idea?

[11/28/19]   For those of you who are attending the conference, you may know that there is a transport strike on the 5th of December. However, I've just found out that the no. 1 and no. 14 lines will still be running. 14 goes to near the University of Chicago, so it is an option if you are nearby the line.

Tour Paris With the Marquis de Sade as Your Guide

For those of you coming to the conference, here is a nice list of places frequented by Sade himself. Some still exist. His favorite restaurant still exists, but is far too expensive for my budget....

Come join us if you dare.

[10/02/19]   Thanks to everyone who submitted papers / ideas / proposals.

We’ll be in touch very soon with you all.

For those of you planning to attend this conference, I can strongly recommend a sourjourn to Sade's cell at Vincennes. Its only about a 25 minute subway ride, and you can see first hand Sade's cell, which they have maintained and which features one of his letters in a glass case. But you will not find a single copy of his books for sale in the gift shop.....

Transgressive Cultures Conference

[08/05/19]   TRANSGRESSIVE CULTURES CONFERENCE
CALL FOR PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS

THIS YEAR’S TOPIC FOCUS: THE MARQUIS DE SADE
Proposals are sought from both scholars and independent researchers on topics such as:

•TRANSGRESSIVE ART, FILM, LITERATURE AND PERFORMANCE • EMERGENT PHILOSOPHIES OF TRANSGRESSION • RE-READINGS AND NEW APPROACHES TO TRANSGRESIVE PHILOSOPHY • EXPLORATIONS OF PO*******HY AND EROTICA • ABERRANT BEHAVIOR AND OUTSIDERS • ETC

This two-day conference will take place at the University of Chicago, Paris, on 5th and 6th of December, 2019.

We are currently seeking abstracts and panel proposals (panels must be presented by a pre-existing group of collaborators) for the Transgressive Cultures conference. While we are seeking ‘papers’ exploring any aspect associated with transgressive cultures this year we are especially interested in proposals for papers on the works of the Marquis de Sade. We welcome papers on Sade as a writer, as a philosopher, or as inspiration for subsequent generations of transgressives.

Abstracts and proposals should be no more than 250-words in length. For presentations a length of 30-40 minutes is desirable. Panel proposals should be approximately ninety minutes long.

Given the nature of the conference we are especially interested in alternative or expanded forms of presentation and performance, readings, short films, and other forms of alternative practice are encouraged.

Deadline for abstracts: October 1st 2019.

Jack Sargeant PhD, conference convenor, and Tom Garretson MA, conference coordinator, with the kind support of Sebastien Greppo and the University of Chicago, Paris.

[10/01/17]   Thanks to everyone who submitted a proposal.

If you haven't submitted yet you have until midnight tonight Paris time.

If you have submitted, you'll get a reply this week.

[09/18/17]   We are getting close to the deadline for papers, we still want to see whats out there - historical, cultural, philosophical paper submissions are welcome!

Some developments that people may have missed:

we are looking at publishing and developing an annual event.

we are accepting papers in languages other than english, as long as as an english translation is made available.

people wanting to present radical papers (or papers in radical ways), performance lectures etc are encouraged to submit.

[email protected]

[08/26/17]   FAQ: will there be publishing options?
A: this is something currently being developed. The ultimate aim is to make this an annual event and that would incorporate such ideas.

11/08/2017

FAQ: what language are the paper presentations in?
A: Thus far most proposals are in English but we can also have papers presented in French. Please note, we would like a translation of these papers provided too.
