WHEN DO I NEED AN EASEL? AND WHAT ARE THEY IN GENERAL?

Of course, it is said that everyone needs it. Absolutely all artists. But I would argue about it. Today I will tell you in which cases it is really needed and when you can completely do without it. I will also explain the fundamental differences between the diverse subspecies, as this can greatly affect your choice. Let’s go.

The word "easel" comes from the German Malbrett, and literally translates as "drawing board". Easels come in different types. Of the most common: tripod (folding mini-easel with three legs), static (heavy wooden structure with shelves and fasteners) and sketchbook (what artists take with them to the open air). Most often they are made of wood, since wood is a stronger and more wear-resistant material. If we talk about which one to choose, then the first option with a tripod will be the most budget-friendly. It does not take up much space, it is easy to carry and unfold. You can even take it with you to the open-air and easily transport it anywhere. This is probably my favorite. However, from the minuses - it may be somewhat fragile. With careful and careful handling, of course, it will not break, but it will not withstand much weight if you intend to put heavy wooden tablets or dimensional canvases on it. For such purposes, the second option is perfect for you: a static easel. It is certainly quite bulky and will cost you much more, but it will withstand everything in the world and will last for many generations. People paint with such easels in all art academies.

In the photo, for example, you can notice a tripod - the easiest option for every beginner artist. And if we talk about the real need for an easel, then only if you paint oil paintings or work with perspective in a drawing. Everything else does not require you to arrange your work vertically. Rather, any flat surface of the house will do perfectly. Well, if there is none, you can buy an ordinary wooden tablet.

Do you use any of the above types of easel?

HOW TO FEEL THE SHAPE OF A SCULPTURE

Many of us still believe that sculpture is a separate craft. Why do they make statues? For what do people try this art? To get a living portrait of a person from a huge piece of clay? In this article I will talk about the benefits of modeling, and whether it is possible to become a full-fledged sculptor if you are an artist.

Perhaps you haven't known, but many of the masters of painting and drawing known to us today were full-fledged sculptors during their lifetime. I'm not talking about creators like Rodin or Michelangelo right now. Everything is clear here. There were artists who came to sculpture because of blindness, like Degas, or simply from the boundless creative flow, like Gauguin. Sculpture is a way to feel the shape of the depicted object even more. It is more complete and capacious to feel its volumes. All students of art academies, along with other disciplines, have always had sculpture. It was especially very useful to combine, for example, drawing and sculpture. You draw a portrait of a woman, and at the same time, sculpt it. Of course, not literally at the same time.

I came to this realization from personal experience. Sculpture classes were one of my favorite hobbies at the academy. I even went for some time to private lessons with a fairly popular sculptor, for whose acquaintance I was immensely grateful to my father. And you know, I really liked it. I even thought about changing my specialty. However, in this whole story, I was terribly lacking in color. And despite the fact that any sculpture could be painted, I preferred to apply paint on canvas, and leave the color of the sculpted work in rough earthen or clay shades.

For modeling, you don't have to buy clay. You can, for example, limit yourself to a small package of special sculptural plasticine and a minimal set of tools. And you can sculpt right at home, on a separate board for this purpose. If you want to feel the roughness and volume of clay - visit a familiar sculptor. There you will find everything you are looking for.
