One of my students and I made a research in which we sought to explain the effects which standard of living has on consumption of alcohol and to***co. We tested our hypothesis on a selection of 42 developed and 42 developing countries, and found that in developed countries people on average drink more but smoke less than in developing countries.
The main characteristics of developed countries are: high GDP, high income, high levels of education and healthcare, strong economy, etc. In general, people living in developed countries enjoy a high standard of living. Developing countries are all opposite: low GDP, low income, poor infrastructure, and weak economy, which draw a number of other problems such as poverty, unemployment, corruption, pollution, health risks, low access to sanitation and hygiene, and in general a low quality of life.
Figures 1 and 2 show the box plots of alcohol and to***co consumption in 2016 separately for developed and developing countries. The difference in alcohol consumption between the two groups is statistically significant (t=-2.7703, p higher level of development -> more alcohol! In the following part of our research we explained and looked into possible reasons for which higher standard implies more alcohol.
Feel free to contact me for more details on this research!
