📚 I’ve had the privilege of partnering with school leaders and teachers to design systems, provide 1:1 coaching, and support instruction that builds student confidence—especially as schools prepare for state exams.

Like it or not, high-stakes testing is a reality. But here’s the good news: with the right support, students can do more than just pass. They can think critically, solve problems, and rise to the challenge.

Here are a few best practices I’ve seen work well:

✅ Make it student-centered
Be transparent. Share data. Help students understand what they’re being tested on and set their own goals. Ownership increases engagement.

✅ Be intentional
Don’t review everything. Focus on the standards that matter most based on formative data.

✅ Use data to drive instruction
Real-time insights should shape daily decisions. Data isn’t just for admins—it’s a tool for teaching.

✅ Make it motivating
Connect progress to meaningful rewards. Let students see—and celebrate—their growth.

At the end of the day, test prep should build confidence, not anxiety. When we approach it with purpose and care, students are ready for what’s next—in school and in life.

I am honored to have been selected as a fellow in the Nashville Chamber’s Leadership in Public Education program.

This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with peers and delve deeper into the structures and systems that shape Metro Nashville Public Schools.

As a former MNPS teacher and current education consultant working with MNPS schools, my commitment to seeing students, leaders, educators, and stakeholders thrive in the district is unwavering. I eagerly anticipate the chance to learn, grow, and contribute my skills to further support Nashville’s public schools.

While pursuing my Master’s Degree, I conducted extensive research focusing on the impact of comprehensive vocabulary instruction on the academic outcomes of English Learners. Through my studies, I found that Multilingual Learners benefit significantly from repeated exposure to vocabulary words, enabling them to achieve mastery. My research supported the idea that teaching new vocabulary to English Learners is most effective when integrated into the context of a book, reinforced through explicit instruction, and practiced through real-life examples and applications.

📚 As an education consultant, I am deeply committed to advancing the literacy outcomes of students, particularly Black and Brown children from underserved communities. I collaborate closely with school leaders and education organizations to improve literacy outcomes. I take great pride in my partnership with Metro Nashville Public Schools, where I am currently involved in programming initiatives aimed at addressing diverse academic needs. These initiatives encompass English language development and college readiness, as well as essential student social and emotional learning (SEL) components such as fostering a sense of school belonging and encouraging community engagement.

📚 I am truly honored to partner with school leaders to contribute to the educational journey of students, working diligently to improve literacy outcomes and support students in achieving their full potential.

Me: What’s your favorite book of all time?

Mayor O’Connell: “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”

Reading stands as a hallmark of great leaders. Research reveals that the average CEO reads 50-60 books a year. Unfortunately, many children fail to develop a lifelong habit of reading due to early struggles with foundational skills.

During his inaugural speech, Nashville Mayor O’Connell declared an ambitious goal: ensuring that all students, especially those from Black and Brown communities, read at grade level by 3rd grade.

This vision holds potential for transformative change in the lives of students if executed effectively. Learning to read isn’t intuitive. Mastering early literacy demands explicit instruction in phonics, enabling students to connect speech sounds to written words, coupled with exposure to a rich print environment. Teaching students to read effectively requires direct and comprehensive instruction in foundational literacy strategies, intentional training for educators in teaching reading, and effective strategies for families to promote reading at home.

When these elements operate effectively and consistently, all Nashville students will experience the joys of reading and harness its life-transforming power.

Hey, y'all!

It’s been a while. The first quarter of the year has been action packed. I’ve been having an awesome time partnering with dynamic school leaders, while also making time for fun.

I just got back from a Paris girls trip to celebrate my 35th birthday. I’m relaxed, energized, and ready to continue my work with schools to increase literacy outcomes.

At the start of the year, I designed the Well-Read School Framework to utilize strategic planning, independent reading culture, coaching and instructional design, and intervention and support to close literacy gaps.

Using the Well-Read School Framework to support school leaders, I have provided the following services:
📚Designed a multi-year plan for improving school independent-reading culture. 📚 Led school- and family-wide assessments to determine the best support for English learners.
📚 Developed customized student-reading interventions to close gaps in reading and get students on or above grade level.
📚 Provided individualized, data-centered teacher coaching to rapidly increase teacher performance and student outcomes.
📚 Created rigorous and engaging project-based curriculum that exposes students to a diverse selection of authors and protagonists.

Throwback to last month when I had the privilege to read to this dynamic group of young people.

We read Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall. Jabari battles with nervousness as he attempts his first dive. The book is relatable to anyone who’s had to overcome the fear of trying something new and scary. The students were glued to the story and at the end, a young boy exclaimed, “now that was a great book!”

Majority of my education work is with middle and high schoolers, so hanging with these younger students was a delightful experience. Their joy was contagious, and I received what felt like 100 hugs!

Thanks Ms. Jones () for inviting me to share the love of reading with your students.

Shoutout to for recommending the book to me.

Have you read Jabari Jumps with kids before?
