Scientists Just Removed HIV From Cells Using CRISPR Gene Editing:

It prevented the virus from replicating and blocked reinfection.

Scientists at Temple University have used CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to remove HIV-1 DNA from the genomes of human immune cells.

In lab experiments with patient-derived T-cells, the cleared cells remained resistant to HIV even after re-exposure, and the method was found to be safe with no toxic effects.

This breakthrough, published in Nature: Scientific Reports, builds on earlier studies where the team edited HIV DNA out of human cell lines but now demonstrates the technique’s effectiveness in real patient cells.

This research is a significant step toward a potential cure for HIV, as it offers a way to permanently eliminate the virus from infected cells rather than merely suppressing it with antiretroviral drugs.

Current treatments require lifelong adherence, and the virus can re-emerge if medication is stopped. The success of this gene-editing approach opens the door for new therapies that could eradicate HIV reservoirs in the body, marking a crucial development in the global fight against the virus.
