Annie Easley, an incredible ‘human-computer’ behind many of NASA’s feats.
Born on this day in 1933, Annie was one of the first African-American employees to work as a computer scientist at NASA.
As a 'human-computer' she performed complex maths calculations by hand, and later progressed to computer programming.
She developed code for analysing alternative power technology, which aided the success of the Centaur rocket.
Later in her career, she became an equal employment opportunity counsellor, and always carried her mother’s advice:
“You can be anything you want to be, but you have to work at it.”
