🇫🇷 🇩🇪 🇦🇱 🇧🇦 🇽🇰 🇲🇪 🇲🇰 🇷🇸 They are communications professionals, journalists, civil society representatives, young professionals and advanced students. They come from France, Germany, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. For the next six weeks, they’ll work together on communication projects about EU enlargement to the Western Balkans.

🇪🇺 We’re delighted to introduce the 30 participants in our newly launched digital campus, EU*WeBalkansConnect!

They’ll take online courses covering:
🔹The history of European integration
🔸The political contexts of the Western Balkans, France and Germany
🔹Franco-German reconciliation
🔸EU enlargement methodology and negotiation chapters
🔹The rule of law and democratic standards
🔸Economic convergence and governance
🔹The EU’s global role and security policy
🔸Political communication and narratives around enlargement
🔹Media literacy and societal polarisation

👋 The programme will conclude with a weekend workshop in Nice. We’re already looking forward to meeting everyone in person!

🚀 We launched the programme this week with representatives of all the project partners. Matthias Waechter, CIFE’s Director General, welcomed the participants alongside Trimbach-Rognon Pascale, Secretary-General of the Franco-German Youth Office OFAJ DFJW, and Selena Tasic Stevanic and Stanislava Marojević – Public Diplomacy Manager and Community Manager at WEglobal respectively – representing WeBalkans. Tanja Elend, Project Manager at CIFE, moderated the welcome session and led a lively round of introductions. It was a chance to hear about the participants’ varied professional backgrounds, interests and languages – and their curiosity about one another’s countries.

🇫🇷🇩🇪🇺🇦🇲🇩 The first-ever EU*Connect Alumni Summer Academy has come to a close! 14 participants from France, Germany, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, alumni of the past four editions of our EU*Connect online campus, came together at the EuropäischeAkademieOtzenhausen for an intensive week of workshops, discussions, visits and a simulation on European decision-making.

🇪🇺 The programme also took the group to Strasbourg, where they visited the Council of Europe and had the opportunity to exchange at the European Youth Centre with Pascale Trimbach-Rognon, Secretary General of the Franco-German Youth Office OFAJ DFJW, MEP Oliver Schenk Oliver Schenk, Tobias Flessenkemper and Marius Schlageter, respectively Head of the Council of Europe’s Youth Department and Policy Advisor. Back in Saarland, a fishbowl discussion with Dr Deniz Alkan from the State Chancellery of Saarland Staatskanzlei des Saarlandes offered another opportunity to reflect on the role of young people and civil society in shaping the future of Europe.

🔆 What made this week particularly special was seeing a community that had so far mostly met online come together in person. After many hours of joint learning and exchange across borders, the participants strengthened their connections, exchanged perspectives and created new ones. As our lecturer Paul Culley put it, they are now ready to “write a script for their common European future.”

💠 A big thank you to our partner Europäische Akademie Otzenhausen for co-organising the programme and hosting us, and to the Franco-German Youth Office and the State Chancellery of Saarland for their generous support.

💮 And a very special thank you to all our lecturers and guests who contributed their expertise and engaged so openly with the participants!

✴️ It was a real pleasure to see the EU*Connect community grow beyond the digital classroom - and to witness the energy, curiosity and commitment of a new generation of Europeans.

🇧🇪 Another successful international CIFE Alumni meeting came to a close this weekend in Brussels!

📚 On Friday, after a visit to the “Postcolonial?” exhibition at the House of European History, the Alumni gathered for a human library session, where 5 of our former students presented themselves in the form of a book, sharing their experiences. This was followed by an opening reception.

🇪🇺 On the following day, a visit to the permanent exhibition of the House of European History was organised, before a meet-up at the Brussels food festival taking place in the city this weekend.

🎤 The day culminated with a keynote speech delivered by CIFE President Herman Van Rompuy and networking and catch-ups during the cocktail reception.

🦪 Place Flagey was the final meeting point on a rainy Sunday morning, where the Alumni gathered to chat with seafood and drinks.

📼 This photo was taken during the 1986-87 academic year in front of the Palais de Marbre, where CIFE was based at the time. The Palais de Marbre now serves as part of the municipal archives of Nice.

🇬🇪 Last week we welcomed the participants of the summer university in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi.

◾️Organised in partnership with the New Vision University, our students analysed Security Challenges in the Black Sea Region, covering a wide range of topics such as EU policies in the region, Georgia-Türkiye relations and energy security and sustainability.

⛰️ In addition to the classes, the participants also visited the city of Tbilisi, and travelled to Sighnaghi at the heart of the wine-growing region, plus Bodbe Monastery.

🇧🇪 A very intensive and dynamic weekend workshop in Brussels brought the first year of the Executive Master to a close!

🔸The students were given an insight into European decision-making with insider tips on the working of the institutions during a tour of the European quarter. Next, at the European Parliament, the students met CIFE Alumnus Philipp Jauernik, EPRS Policy Analyst, for a behind-the-scenes look at everyday parliamentary life.

🤝 On the following day, the students also had the opportunity to take part in a simulation of a European Council summit, to prepare and negotiate a declaration thanks to the guidance of . After intense negotiations, the students reached an agreement on enlargement, strengthening European defence and institutional reform.

🔜 The students were given a taster of what’s to come in the second year with some of our experts, including Emre Gür, Gyöngyvér Gyene, Ralf Kanitz, Thomas Traguth and Veronika Czina. Thank you to everyone involved and we look forward to seeing you again in October in Vienna!

👏 A triple graduation took place last week in Nice - well done to the students of our Joint Masters in Global Economic Governance and Public Affairs (GEGPA), in EU Trade & Climate Diplomacy (EUDIPLO) and in European Cultural Governance (EUCULTURE), who were awarded their Master degrees last Friday!
🌊 Surrounded by the love and encouragement of their family and friends, the graduation ceremony was held at the Hotel Méridien, with a direct view on the Promenade des Anglais.

💠 In his keynote address, Jourdain Vaillant, diplomat at the French Foreign Ministry, warmly congratulated the graduates, sharing some advice from a diplomat’s point of view.

🎓 After congratulatory speeches by CIFE Director General Matthias Waechter, Francesca De Sanctis, representing Luiss School of Government Luiss School of Government, and Arnaud Leconte, Programme Director of the Joint Masters at CIFE, the graduates were awarded their well-deserved Master degrees.

🍀 As we bid farewell to all the graduates, we extend our warmest congratulations and wish them the very best in their future endeavours!

🔆 Two years came to a close after much hard work, precious new friendships and eight big weekends spent together in Rome, Berlin, Nice, Vienna, Budapest, Brussels and Barcelona. Congratulations to the 2026 cohort of the Executive Master in EU Studies, who concluded their studies with a workshop and a festive dinner on the beach in Nice!

🎓 The students defended their Master theses and presented their final papers to the jury. Their presentations tackled highly topical subjects such as EU enlargement, cohesion policy, EU defence and Greenland, and fundamental rights protection in Europe.

🌅 On Saturday evening, students, professors and CIFE staff celebrated together at the beach. It was a lovely evening and a special occasion to look back on a two-year-long academic journey.

💮 We thank our students for all their excellent work and their good vibes. We wish you all the best for your next professional endeavours!
