Raymond Depardon is a French photographer and filmmaker whose work was recently on display in Montpellier.
His photography uses colour in an almost unexpected way. In his USA series, he captures quiet, ordinary spaces, often called “non-lieux,” that feel suspended in time.
There is a strange familiarity to these images, and yet something foreign at the same time. A calm, almost cinematic or romanticized distance emerges, reflecting not just the United States 🇺🇸 , but also Depardon’s own gaze on it. Although his work is no longer on display, you can check out the most recent exposition, les Boutographies, on display until May 31st.

He is a French photographer and filmmaker whose work was recently on display at Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier. The exhibition, Extreme Hotel, brought together nearly 150 colour photographs taken from the 1960s to today.

From major world events to quieter everyday scenes, Depardon travelled across the globe and spent decades documenting history in motion, from the Olympics to Queen Elizabeth II. Raised in rural France, he brings a deeply human gaze to the places he’s travelled and the moments he’s witnessed.

What stays with you most is how personal his photography feels, even while working for major news agencies and during the golden age of photojournalism.
