Work from home
“IT’S ALL IN ENGLISH, IT’S WELL PAID AND DIFFERENT EVERY DAY"

“Four years ago, I was wondering ‘how can I earn regular money but stay flexible?’ I started off with the ideal: working from home so I’d be there for my own kids, work that was varied, interesting, well-paid, and ideally didn’t require perfect French.
Well, that seemed impossible!
“A friend suggested hosting French students so they learn English in a family environment. I researched different companies and decided Daily English was the best provider. It’s run by British people, so I had no worries about understanding everything and could just call if I had questions. Even for the students and their families, the whole point is that you’re only supposed to use English, so it becomes your selling point - that’s what they want!
“By the time our first students arrived, I felt confident about welcoming them. There’s a clear structure to visits: they arrive on Sunday afternoon, and you spend the first evening making them feel comfortable. From Monday to Friday, there’s a lesson after breakfast, we go out after lunch, then after dinner we play board games or watch an English film. On Saturday, they leave by 11am so you have some time to yourself, even if you host for consecutive weeks.
“I know some people might worry about teaching, but Daily English sends a whole teaching programme and lessons so you print off what you need. You don’t have to be a grammar expert, the kids are there to experience life in an English-speaking family, and they learn more by having fun.
“For afternoon activities, depending where you live, it could be beach football, bowling, kayaking, painting, baking, tennis or laser quest. We included stuff our own kids enjoyed - they get out and do more when we have students with us.
“I offer British or American dishes, so breakfast is cereal, toast or muffins, lunch might be sandwiches, soup, salads or pasta, and dinners include fish and chips, burgers, homemade pizza, shepherd’s pie or a barbecue. And I like to offer desserts that students haven’t tried before, like apple crumble, cheesecake, fruit salad or syrup sponge.
“We know beforehand about dietary needs from their application form, which also includes health information, favourite activities and other details to help you prepare. They already know about your family through the website - they choose you so they know if you have sons, daughters, dogs, cats or chickens!
“Naturally, there’s some paperwork (this is France!) but Daily English makes that as simple as possible. They also talked me through how to set up everything legally and I was delighted to find there weren’t huge social charges.
“Most of us have moments of panic about getting the admin right, so it’s reassuring working with English-speakers based in France who respect government guidelines and have an ethical approach. They even have online booking so you instantly know who’s booked and when.
“Many students stay in touch and often return. We’ve already had a great couple of years, earning good money alongside looking after our own kids and no two weeks are the same. It’s worked out better than I thought so if you’re thinking about this as a new career, go for it!” Annaliza and Scott host family with Daily English.
