Georgia Tech-Europe is Tech's off-campus instructional site located in Metz, France. (formerly GTL)

Centrally located in eastern France along the Luxembourg and German borders, Georgia Tech-Europe ("GTE"), formerly known as Georgia Tech-Lorraine (“GTL”), is 80 minutes by train from Paris. Georgia Tech-Europe is an innovative institution focused on academics, research, and innovation, and offering year-round undergraduate, Masters, and PhD programs. Students can gain valuable research experience and graduate education through the International Research Laboratory, Georgia Tech-CNRS IRL 2958, a joint international laboratory between Georgia Tech and the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). Say “Bonjour!” to Leonardo Program Director Jeanne Dupont, who’s always working hard to build a community abroad for GTE students 🐝🫶

Jeanne moved to Metz almost four years ago to work with Georgia Tech after getting her master’s degree studying geopolitics, languages, and culture, achieving her goal of speaking English daily at work.

The Leonardo Program originally started with a single teacher sharing event info and hosting small outings but, since then, has evolved into a fully-fledged program for students, shaped by local opportunities and student interest. Jeanne coordinates with local businesses and students to arrange everything from cooking, pottery, drawing, and embroidery classes to city, museum, and concert hall visits, as well as trivia nights! It’s never a dull night here at GTE!

Excited to be part of the Georgia Tech Europe community, Jeanne loves interacting with students, watching them discover Europe and helping them make new friends along the way, as well as her colleagues, who have become close friends that she can laugh with as they work. She values learning every day, crediting GTE for teaching her to be able to go with the flow and navigate unexpected events. Her catchphrase “Let’s go!” perfectly reflects this mentality, encouraging people around her to jump straight in, not worry, and just do it. A similar French idiom to bring home (or prepare for your studies abroad) is “ça ne mange pas de pain” which literally translates to “it doesn’t eat bread” but is used to say “it doesn’t cost anything” or “there’s no harm in trying.” So, next time you face a low-effort or no risk decision with nothing to lose, try practicing your French! 🥖

Meet Hannah Bonvechio, a rising second year whose mechanical engineering major helped shape her experience here at GTE.

Hannah traveled to SPA, Belgium for the Belgian Grand Prix, checking off a long-time goal of attending an F1 race. Beyond meeting people from countless other countries, all sharing the same passion for racing, and an unexpected hike to the track deep in the hills of the Ardennes, she loved being able to discuss aerodynamic and composite features of the cars with what she’s learned as a mechanical engineer. She specifically notes the unbelievable sound the cars make as they fly down the straights and downshift around the corners and attests that getting Bronze tickets for an F1 race while attending GTE is highly worth it.

When it comes to travel, Hannah lives by the idea that “it’s all part of the adventure,” a quote she learned from her mom. She believes she’s done her best practicing this attitude over the course of GTE, remembering that everything will work out in the end, even when she was waiting on a Flexibus at 2am to get back to class on Monday. “It may have cost me some sleep and comfort, but it gave me more time with friends when time abroad is limited. In the end, we always got to where we were going (just sometimes a more inconvenient route), but it makes for some pretty fun stories later.”

Hannah leaves her fellow GTE students with the advice to have fun, to take advantage of every moment since the program flies by fast, and a quote by Amy March from Little Women: “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.”

Meet Gracie Redmond, a rising junior studying mechanical engineering, who’s learning a lot on her first venture outside of the U.S.!

Gracie’s grandma always told her “The world is your oyster!” and she’s taking it literally this summer, trying to see as many places and pursue as many new experiences as possible with the opportunity GTE has given her to experience unfamiliar cultures and explore parts of the world she’s never seen. She’s happy to bring back home new skills of quick thinking and problem solving, though she was admittedly not as happy when experiencing the situations that taught her the skills. “I’ve had so many travel plans go wrong due to delayed trains and missed connections, and learning to adapt and not panic has really helped me grow.”

Meet Lukas Fritsch, a rising sophomore Biomedical Engineering student spending his summer at GTE as a Stamps President’s Scholar! ✈️🗺️

Lukas chose GTE to experience new cultures and connect with European family members for the first time! Living in France has served as his ultimate travel launchpad, allowing him to explore everywhere from Amsterdam and Florence to Porto and Budapest.

Traveling across Europe using his English and Spanish skills has built a huge level of real-world confidence, adaptability, and open-mindedness. His favorite memory? A whirlwind day trip to San Sebastián, Spain, where a rising tide soaked his gear at the beach. Instead of letting it ruin the day, he dried everything on the rocks and spent the evening exploring local Basque food culture and pintxos.
