💥Shoulder Movement and Function 💥

⁉️ Have you ever been told to pull your shoulder blades “down and back” when reaching overhead or performing overhead exercises?

❌ If so, don’t

❌ This unnecessarily restricts normal movement (upward rotation and posterior tilt) at the shoulder blades (scapulae), and does not allow the shoulder girdle to move as it was designed to

✅ Instead, I like to use the cues to "reach long", “chest high”, and/or "make a large arc with your hand" while reaching overhead to help achieve the full scapular upward rotation and posterior tilt we are looking for

Today we celebrate the anniversary of Walter’s birthday; his unique and tireless dedication in preserving the authenticity of the technique he learnt from F. Matthias Alexander; and his generosity, patience and skill training generations of teachers at The Constructive Teaching Centre and beyond.

From the many of us who continue to take inspiration from your teaching, writing and example, thank you and Happy Birthday Walter!

I feel greatly privileged to stand before you tonight. It is just seventy years ago this
August since I first read ‘Man’s Supreme Inheritance’ and sought to answer the simple question, “What is the Alexander Technique?” Of course, at that time I did not have the experience to understand what I was reading. It was only long afterwards that I realised that Alexander’s writings, like the traveller’s tales of distant lands, can only be truly appreciated when we have made the journey ourselves.
