Leaf teaching online offers a variety of English and French courses for all age groups

Leaf teaching online offers a variety of English and French courses for all age groups. We offer a wide range of textbook and conversation based classes that cater for all ages. Classes are based around appropriate learning material and resources, and focus on specific areas of English and French that students find the most challenging. Whether by phone or video, classes will follow a structure according to what the student has expressed a wish to focus on, and will give verbal corrections as well as feedback by private message and email. Our objective is to support students' specific wants and needs and to help them to achieve their goals within the required time.

"Learning is not a spectator sport." – D. Blocher

🌿

Learning is not just about sitting back and listening to someone else in the hope of absorbing that knowledge.

- It is about asking questions, giving opinions, communicating and participating.
- it is understanding the difference between passivity and attentiveness, and applying that understanding to classes.
- it is the ability to abmit to being wrong. When you thought you were right.

We are all, always, learning. As long as we are on this earth.

French to English expressions.

🍃

I get a lot of questions about translating expressions to and from both languages.
The truth is that we simply cannot literally translate from either language, as it just doesn't make any sense.

Take this expression:

"Les chiens ne font pas des chats"

Literal meaning:

"dogs don't make cats"

The French expression, "les chiens ne font pas des chats" is a colorful way of saying that children resemble their parents in character; that is, in attitudes, beliefs, goals, talents, etc. According to this expression, it’s logical for children to be like their parents in the same way that it’s logical for puppies to behave like dogs, not cats.

The English equivalent, « The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, » makes the same point in a different way. Rather than insisting on the fact that the parent and child are the same species, the English expression explains that the similarity in character is due to the child (apple) being separate from yet staying close to the parent (tree).

METAPHORS

🌿

A metaphor is a figure of speech that is used to make a comparison between two things that aren't alike but do have something in common. Unlike a simile, where two things are compared directly using like or as, a metaphor's comparison is more indirect, usually made by stating something is something else. A metaphor is very expressive; it is not meant to be taken literally.

🌿

Animal Metaphors:

The classroom was a zoo.

The alligator's teeth are white daggers.

She is a peacock.

My teacher is a dragon

🌿

Nature Metaphors:

The snow is a white blanket.

He is a shining star.

Her long hair was a flowing golden river.

Tom's eyes were ice as he stared at her.

🌿

Everyday metaphors:

Her lovely voice was music to his ears.

The world is a stage.

My kid's room is a disaster area.

Life is a rollercoaster

SIMILES

🌿

A simile is a figure of speech that compares two different things in an interesting way.

🌿

Similes and metaphors are often confused with one another. The main difference between a simile and metaphor is that a simile uses the words "like" or "as" to draw a comparison and a metaphor simply states the comparison without using "like" or "as"

🌿

Some other well-known similes you will often hear are:

As cute as a kitten

As happy as a clam

As light as a feather

As blind as a bat

As bold as brass

As bright as a button

As shiny as a new pin

As cold as ice

As common as dirt

As cool as a cucumber
