Arts Discovery - Jenny Wells

Arts Discovery - Jenny Wells Everyone learns differently, and Arts Discovery was set up after many years of teaching students in a range of settings but all with diverse learning styles.

Hi, I'm Jenny Wells - online tutor for visual arts, English Language and Literature, Film Studies and graphic novels,

- Home schooled families from KS2 - 5;
- Fun and affordable learning
- Arts Awards and GCSEs. Arts Discovery is about learning through the visual arts, film and language. An essential modern world skill is having the ability to understand created meaning through the juxtapositio

n of image and word to read the world around you. Art Discovery is an Arts Award Centre, member of the Tutors' Association, holds a full enhanced DBS check and has current Level 2 safeguarding training. I am a secondary teacher with over 16 years experience across all Key Stages to A level and also an accredited Arts Award assessor. I feel that it is important to match the qualification to the child and so the option of quality learning through formal exams or applied skills recognises and celebrates those differences. I have been teaching home educated students online since 2014 having previously had the fun of home educating my own children. Pricing: fees are kept simple and as accessible as possible.

Dyslexia, 'in the real world that's a huge advantage '.... But what about in education?

My journey through my primary and secondary education was frustrating, checkered, and tiring. I really loved learning, no doubt about it. But no one picked up I was dyslexic until after A levels.

Despite this, I did go to university. I studied English and Art History, and then an MA in English Literature. The joint degree, and particularly the breadth of Art History have full range to my 'creative and lateral ' thinking.

What has this got to do with my teaching?

Everything!

I strive to create materials and methods of acquiring skills that will work across the student cohort. I constantly reflect and refine so that all students have solid, accessible ways of working. I try to make it fun and interactive. Some of this was learned through my own experience of struggling, some in the classroom, some from home edding my ND children. Not everything works every time, so I adapt and encourage experimentation without judgement.

I don't just try and put myself in my students' shoes: I was in their shoes and I have walked the same mile.

GCSE English Language for home-educated students

I’m Jenny. I’ve taught English for 20+ years, home educated my own children, and now build small-group English and creative writing courses that meet students where they are — and help them grow.

Not flashy. Not off the shelf. Just deeply thought-through teaching.

My Cambridge iGCSE English Language course is designed for home-educated learners who need structure, clarity and confidence without being pushed through a one-size-fits-all system.

I choose Cambridge because it gives students space to develop real reading and writing skills: understanding texts, shaping ideas, using language effectively, and learning how to respond with confidence. You can read more about it on my blog on my website.

My GCSE English courses include:

live small-group classes
clear weekly structure
regular reading and writing practice
thoughtful feedback
exam-focused preparation
a supportive, home-ed friendly approach

A self-guided option is also available for students who prefer to work more independently.

The live taster sessions have now finished, but if you’re considering the course for September, you’re very welcome to get in touch and ask for details or a recording of taster.

You can also read more about why I teach Cambridge iGCSE English Language on the blog.

Inference can be daunting - whether you're studying English language or literature, at GCSE or KS3; whether you're a keen leisure reader or use texts pragmatically.

I teach ways of spotting patterns in text. In any text. As the proverbs say, "Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

Creative writing isn’t about having a perfect idea before you start.

As a published writer, I know it’s about discovering what you think, what you notice, what you imagine — and sometimes surprising yourself along the way.

In Creative Writing in 10: World Building, students will explore how writers create places, atmospheres, rules, conflicts and characters that feel alive on the page.

A supportive 10-week course for young writers who want to build confidence, experiment with ideas, and enjoy writing without exam pressure.

Starting September.

Revision isn’t just rereading notes and hoping they stick.

The strongest revision is active:
retrieving what you know, explaining ideas out loud, applying them to questions, and reflecting on what still feels wobbly.

For English, that might mean:

‱ answering one exam-style question
‱ explaining a quotation without looking
‱ discussing a character’s change across a text
‱ improving one paragraph rather than rewriting everything

Good revision is not always longer. Often, it is simply more active.
