AIR SERV SUDAN CREW SAFELY RETURNS HOME

On April 15th, violence erupted in Sudan as the struggle for power between two military factions came to a head. Five members of the Air Serv team were caught without means of evacuation, along with thousands of other foreign nationals and millions of civilians. The crew, based in Nyala, had been providing air support for humanitarian operations in the country since 2022.

On April 25th, the crew members departed on a ground convoy along with other members of the INGO community and made their way to the South Sudanese border. Upon crossing into South Sudan, the evacuees were airlifted from Aweil to Wau, and then returned home to Entebbe where they were reunited with their families.

“Humanitarian aviation is a very challenging field to operate in,” said Henk Boneschans, Air Serv’s Managing Director in Uganda. “Along with the stress factors that accompany traditional aircraft operation, crews working in this specific field are also exposed to extreme environments, unforeseen obstacles, and very often, violent conflict. Our Nyala crew exhibited incredible professionalism and bravery in their service to humanity. Words can’t express how grateful we are to have received them home safely, or the sympathy we share with those who remain behind.”

Latest reports from the World Health Organization show more than 500 reported dead and over 4,200 injured since the conflict began. The humanitarian community has expressed alarm over escalating death tolls resulting not only directly from violence, but also the collapse of essential services, inability for those sheltered in place to access food and water, and inevitable disease outbreaks.
