The clocks are soon to go forward - Summertime will soon be upon us and along with it this year’s Summer Song. I am looking forward to sharing my passion for the many gems that are to be found in the English Song répertoire as well as helping those for whom English is a second language to negotiate its intricacies.

The new term has begun and my thoughts have returned to this year's SSI. The diverse group of singers gelled wonderfully well both socially and musically. The latter was evident as a full house responded enthusiastically to the varied musical offerings presented at the final concert. The full ensembles were both operatic but a tremendous contrast. The fight scene from Bizet's Carmen - staged and sung from memory, which opened the programme had wonderful energy. Many of the singers were out of their comfort zone but their singing was a dramatic triumph! The closing ensemble - the conclusion of Ravel's L'Enfant et Les Sortilèges was a beautiful finale. Every day the singers had rigorous language coaching and all managed to display new prowess in their solos which included Fauré, Martini, Hahn and Duparc. More Opera was enjoyed in the duets from Lakmé and Les Contes d'Hoffmann. It was a wonderful week. Next year's programme is still to be decided but a short course on singing in English is being planned so watch this space!

Applications are coming in now but we still have places available on our 2017 course (strictly limited!) - Les Nuits d’Été - 13th to the 20th of August

During the course we will study the song cycle Les nuits d’été by Berlioz and extracts from French language operas such as Carmen, La Belle Hélène and Lakmé. Students will work on their French, interpretation and performance skills, both as soloists and as part of an ensemble. The immersive French experience will see students encouraged to use their conversational French in the village and surrounding areas and have the chance to perform in French to a French audience at the end of the week.
Full board is provided and a limited number of bursaries are available.

We are delighted to announce that Helen Miles (MA, BMus, LRAM, ARAM) will be joining us for our Music and Movement week (27th July - 3rd August).

Helped by Helen's expertise in the field and her extensive experience at many international venues we will be studying the relationship between movement, characterisation and singing through a wide range of music theatre.
