Follow a group of Primary & Secondary Teaching students from the University of Newcastle as they undertake a Study Tour of France & Belgium, exploring the Remembrance Trail of the Western Front of WW1.

Well, all good things must come to an end...

After a few hiccups, that, while happening were stressful, exhausting and worrisome, but will make a hilarious story some day, we are on our way home.
We’re worn out, haggard looking, sweaty and gross, but so incredibly grateful for these past two weeks and all that they’ve entailed.
Massive thanks to Heather, Debbie, Graham & Melanie for making this trip unforgettable!

Au revoir, France & Belgium.
It’s been a blast!

Day 12 - Last night, students and faculty came together to say ‘au revoir’ to the 2019 France and Belgium Study Tour.
From learning about the events, battles and devastating consequences of World War I, to immersing ourselves in a completely new culture along the way.
The last two weeks have given us all the incredible opportunity to grow; not only as future educators but as individuals.
The friendships, memories and the knowledge gained will last a lifetime.
Finally, a big thank you to Heather, Debbie, Graham and Mel for this amazing opportunity and making this trip so incredibly rewarding for us. Your hard work has certainly not gone unnoticed!

Throughout the last few days in Paris, many students had the amazing opportunity to see the Eiffel Tower up close and some even went all the way to the top! Everyone agreed that it was an incredible experience and would highly recommend for anyone visiting Paris.

Day 12 - Today we visited the Louvre, heading straight for the famous Mona Lisa which was much smaller than anticipated! From the French gallery, to the Ancient Egyptian and Greek artefacts, to the stunning Roman sculptures the Louvre never failed to amaze. You could easily spend a whole day wandering the halls of amazing art without even touching the surface but here’s a few pictures to get you started.

Day 10 - Paris Walking Tour

This morning we went on a walking tour around Paris. One group started from the Lourve and some started from our hotel.
On the walking tour, we were able to see the Lourve, the King’s Palace, the Opera House (Phantom of the Opera building), the statue of Napoleon I, Galeries Lafayette and many other beautiful buildings around Paris, despite the rain!

Day 9 - River Cruise along the Seine

Tonight, we took a cruise along the Seine River. We saw many sights along the river that had historic significance to many Parisians.
We saw the Eiffel Tower and at 8pm, it began sparkling.
We also saw many of the bridges and were told the history of each.
At one point, we could even see the remains of Notre Dame!

It was magnificent to see and photos do not do it justice.

Day 9 - Glade of the Armistice, Compiègne, France

We’ve just completed the historical aspect of our study tour with a visit to the site of the signing of the Armistice, in a train carriage amongst the forest on 11 November 1918. Unfortunately the original carriage was destroyed during WW2, but it was quite moving to see the replica, all the same.
The museum on site houses artefacts from the time, including photographs, soldier handicrafts and equipment such as cameras.

Still standing at the entrance to the glades is the very controversial Alsace-Lorraine Monument, depicting the sword of the Allied forces spearing the German eagle. This representation of the war has long been removed from many other museums, so to see this one was quite surprising.
Also on the grounds is the Alliance of Peace, a 3.5m high ring inscribed with the word ‘peace’ in 50 languages.

We’re now on our way to Paris for the remainder of our tour, where we’ll be engaging with a vast variety of cultural experiences.

Day 8 - Sir John Monash Centre and the Australian National Memorial.

The study tours last stop for the day was at the Sir John Monash Centre. Commissioned in 2006, this educational centre is named after the General Sir John Monash who led the Australian Corps with outstanding success on the Western Front in 1918. Students got to experience amazing insights into the events of the war through an interactive system that combines both touch screens and tables with a specially designed app. In the middle of the centre students got to experience a 360 degree theatre that displays a realistic experience into the battles of Villers-Bretonneux and Hamel - providing insights into the soldiers lives on the Western front.

The Australian National Memorial located behind the Sir John Monash Centre, shares its site with the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery. The Memorial consists of a central tower that you can walk to the top of, where you can see the amazing views of the Villers-Bretonneux countryside. The walls that flank the tower are inscribed with the names of 10,719 Australian soldiers who died in France, with no known graves.

Day 8 - Le Hamel

Le Hamel is the location of the Fifth Australian Division where the battle was won following a surprise attack on the Germans who had higher ground at the time. The battle of Le Hamel was lead to victory by Sir John Monash, and this was his first set piece battle as Commander of the Australian Corps. He planned this battle with meticulous care, including down to the fine detail of having one gun every 10 metres along the frontline.

There are still remains of the trenches used in the Battle of Le Hamel found today where you can even spot some Poppy flowers growing.

Day 8 - Adelaide Cemetery

The study tours second stop for today involved a cemetery honouring the soldiers who fell in the war of 1914-1918. This cemetery was named by Australian troops who started it and used for burial of casualties of the recapture of Villers-Bretonneux village on 23 April 1918 and the subsequent fighting which held the German offensive in this sector. Within the cemetery lies 411 British, 22 Canadian, 523 Australian soldiers. The remains of an unknown Australian soldier lay amongst the graves, until 2 November 1993. Today these remains rest within a tomb at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

Day 8 - Franco Australian Museum

This morning, we went to the Franco Australian Museum in Villers-Bretonneux. After the war, Australia helped rebuild the town that was decimated during the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux.
The museum itself is connected to the Victoria School and was built from donations from schools in Victoria, Australia.
The museum presents many photographs and artefacts from Australian soldiers as well as donations from people and organisations in Australia. This museum truly recognises the contribution of Australian soldiers during and after WWI and emphasises the friendship the two nations share.

Day 7 - Thiepval Museum

The last stop for today was the Thiepval Museum and the Thiepval Anglo-French Memorial.
This museum provides insight into the Battle of the Somme. A panoramic view of the Battle of the Somme in 1 day is the first thing you see when entering. Photos attached show the contrast of vastly different events that can occur in just one day. The Battle of the Somme lasted almost 5 months and involved soldiers from over 20 countries.
This museum in particular was highly engaging with its use of controversial questioning and interactive exhibits, shown below.
The Battle of the Somme is known as the deadliest battle of the First World War with almost 450,000 men reported killed, wounded, lost and/or missing. Material evidence and ammunition is still being found in the Somme region each year. 3.5 million men fought from both sides causing many, many casualties.
After the museum, we stepped outside to view the Thiepval Anglo-French Memorial which is on the highest position of the Somme. Many trenches are found today near the memorial that hosts over 72,000 names of soldiers who have no known grave.
