Nurturing greatness since 2006- France’s after-school hub for English-speaking kids, classes & camps!

in 2011, Derek Ferguson, distressed at the idea that RSH was closing, decided to step into the breach to keep this vital community alive. Since then, the bespoke programme has been adapted and developed to fall in line with the National Curriculum in England and Wales. Our teachers are all native English and have come from different horizons: USA, Australia, Ireland, UK, Canada and New Zealand.

Learning all about mosquitoes in our Wednesday CM class! 🦟🔬

As part of our Food and Health topic, our CM students at our Bossuet in Paris have been exploring the world of insects, with a particular focus on the mosquito and its role in the transmission of malaria.

The students discovered more about these tiny insects, how malaria can be transmitted through mosquito bites, and the impact this can have on human health.

A fascinating way to combine English with science and health, while building new vocabulary and encouraging plenty of questions! 📚✨

Grammar in action in Annecy! ✏️📚

Our CE students in Annecy have been busy working on their grammar and spelling, this time focusing on the long ‘ay’ sound. 🔤✨

Through different activities and examples, the children explored the different ways this sound can appear in words, putting their knowledge into practice and developing their spelling skills along the way!

We wanted to share an interesting podcast episode with our Roaming Schoolhouse community:

The episode explores some of the questions many multilingual families face — from balancing the home language and local language, to children mixing languages, responding in the school language, and maintaining a meaningful connection with their family or heritage language.

It also challenges some common myths around multilingualism and shares practical, pressure-free ideas for supporting children’s languages at home.

One message we particularly loved: “Every language is a resource, not a barrier.” 💛

Definitely worth a listen for parents raising children with more than one language! 🎧

Summer at the Roaming Book Club was lots of fun with our holiday Reading Challenge - thank you to all those who took part, shared with us their Bookworm Rating Certificate and well done on reaching your goals!

For those of you who are new, the Roaming Book Club is an online platform allowing students to share book reviews, discover reading recommendations, watch video stories, and participate in fun events like author talks, illustration challenges, and live reading rooms. The platform is secure and exclusive to RSH families - click the link below to create a login and allow a couple of days to be let in.

We are excited to announce that the start of our autumn events will be going live soon including the Reading Room being re-opened for this year, new teacher reviews being published, and a book cover illustration competition happening in late October.

🦠🎤 Presentation time for our CM students in Annecy!

As part of their recent work on health and illness, our students researched a virus before creating their own fantastic presentations and presenting their findings to the class.

They explored topics including symptoms, how viruses spread, prevention and treatment, putting both their research and English skills into practice along the way!

A brilliant opportunity to practise organising information, explaining ideas clearly and speaking confidently in front of others — we loved seeing the creativity and effort that went into their work! 👏✨

Our CE class explored hidden pictures and optical illusions — fascinating images that can trick our eyes by hiding two different pictures within one! 🧠✨

One particularly fun challenge had the students searching for 10 hidden faces in a single picture. Some were definitely easier to spot than others, but we got there eventually! 😄🙌

🍎🦠 Food, health and healthy habits with our Thursday CM class at Abbesses!

Our CM students have been exploring the topic of food and health, looking at everything from common illnesses to how viruses spread and the different ways we can help reduce their transmission. 🦠🧼

💻✨ Our online classes are underway too!

We had a fantastic start to the new school year with our online students, who were challenged to come up with six things they thought would be impossible — and their imaginations certainly delivered!

We heard everything from unicorns and flying pigs to jumping into a cup of water and fishing on the moon! 🦄🐷🌙🎣

It was a brilliant way to get everyone thinking creatively, sharing their ideas and speaking together in English. We loved seeing so much imagination and enthusiasm in our very first class of the year!

Meet Our Wonderful Team of Dedicated Educators 💫👩‍🏫

Meet the Roaming Schoolhouse team for 2026–2027! 😃 A wonderful mix of familiar faces and newer members, all bringing their own experience and enthusiasm to RSH.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Derek – Our President, from Scotland. Derek saved RSH from closure in 2011 and also organises our annual Scotland trip 🚆

👩‍🎓 Jennie – Our Headteacher and Pedagogical Manager from England. With RSH since 2011, Jennie holds two Master’s degrees in Education.

🌞 Gillian – From Buckinghamshire, UK. A former RSH Headteacher, Gillian is now our Head of Online Content and Camp Director.

✨ Pardiese – From the US, our Administrative Manager and the person behind much of the behind-the-scenes magic at RSH!

🫶Alison – From Devon, England. A teacher and qualified Cambridge examiner who joined us after over 30 years teaching in Italy.

💘 Jodie – Our PGCE-qualified teacher from the UK, Exam Prep Coordinator and Communications Coordinator. Recently relocated to Annecy to take our classes there ⛰️

🍃 Jill – From Massachusetts, USA. One of our wonderful teachers as well as a writer and environmental activist.

🙏 Oliver – From South Carolina, USA. Oliver joined our teaching team after first working with us at our camps.

🌎 Louise – From Seattle, USA. A CELTA-qualified teacher currently completing a Master’s in Cognitive Sciences in Paris.

🏓 Mustafa – Originally from Kenya, Mustafa first joined us at one of our autumn camps. A qualified teacher with five years’ experience in France, he is our newest addition to the team!

🌟 Our Annecy classes are off to a fantastic start! 🌟

It has been wonderful to welcome new families to our growing Roaming Schoolhouse community in Annecy and to see our students settling into their classes so brilliantly. 💛

Here, our CE students were exploring optical illusions and pictures that trick the eye 👀, encouraging them to describe what they could see, compare their ideas and discover how the same image can sometimes be seen in completely different ways — all while developing their English vocabulary and communication skills.

We’re so excited for the year ahead and everything our Annecy students will be getting up to!
