Roaming Schoolhouse

Roaming Schoolhouse Nurturing greatness since 2006- France’s after-school hub for English-speaking kids, classes & camps!

in 2011, Derek Ferguson, distressed at the idea that RSH was closing, decided to step into the breach to keep this vital community alive. Since then, the bespoke programme has been adapted and developed to fall in line with the National Curriculum in England and Wales. Our teachers are all native English and have come from different horizons: USA, Australia, Ireland, UK, Canada and New Zealand.

🚤🍇 Whose boat could carry the most cargo?

Inspired by our class reading of Kensuke’s Kingdom, our students put their engineering skills to the test in a boat-building challenge as part of our learning about water and its properties.

Working in small teams, they designed and built their own boats before putting them to the ultimate test: how much cargo could they carry before sinking? Our cargo of choice… grapes! 🍇😂

To make things even trickier, we finished with a bonus round, adding two rocks to increase the weight even further! 🪨🌊

Congratulations to Garence, Violette, Ida and Amelia, whose incredible design carried an impressive 74 grapes plus both bonus rocks, making them our Boat Challenge champions! 🏆

Well done to all of our brilliant young engineers! ⚓💙

🔥 Exploring the element of Fire through poetry 📚

At our summer camp, our CM2/Collège students explored the element of fire through two very different poems: Fireworks by Valerie Worth and Fire and Ice by Robert Frost.

Together, we compared how each poet presents fire in contrasting ways. In Fireworks, fire is exciting, beautiful and full of life, while in Fire and Ice, it becomes a powerful symbol of desire, passion and destruction.

Students analysed poetic techniques including imagery, metaphor, personification and onomatopoeia, discussing how language shapes mood and meaning. It was a fantastic opportunity to see how the same element can be interpreted in completely different ways, encouraging thoughtful discussion and deeper literary analysis.

📚☀️ A little Summer Reading Challenge reminder!

Summer is the perfect time to slow down, relax, and get lost in a good book. As the holidays continue, we’d like to remind our RSH families about our Roaming Book Club Summer Reading Challenge, encouraging children to keep reading, exploring new stories, and developing a lifelong love of books.

Whether your child has set themselves the goal of reading a new genre, completing a book series, or simply reading a little each day, every book is another exciting adventure and a wonderful way to keep learning over the summer.

If you’re looking for inspiration, don’t forget to visit our Roaming Book Club website, where you’ll find book reviews and recommendations written by our own students. It’s a fantastic place to discover your child’s next great read!

We look forward to hearing all about the wonderful books our students have enjoyed when we welcome everyone back after the summer holidays. Happy reading! 📖✨

🎒✨ A favourite Camp tradition!

Every camp, our campers decorate the bags that hold all of their wonderful creations from the week.

Inspired by this summer’s Four Elements theme, each bag became a unique work of art, filled with creativity, colour and imagination. 🌍💧🔥💨

To wrap up camp, we held our End of Camp Bag Competition, where everyone proudly showed off their designs. Congratulations to all our winners—and to every camper for their fantastic effort! 🏆💚

🌟 Some of our older campers put their creativity and imagination to work on these incredible 3D projects! 🎨♻️

Inspired by our Four Elements camp theme, they created imaginative scenes representing Earth, Water, Fire and Air, using recycled boxes, cardboard, paper and other everyday materials. 🌍💧🔥💨

This project encouraged creativity, teamwork and problem-solving while highlighting the importance of sustainability, proving that everyday materials can be transformed into something truly amazing. 💚♻️

Our campers proudly showcased their creations at our End of Summer Camp Show on Friday, sharing their hard work and creativity with everyone✨👏
