For Newman, education is not simply the transmission of information. It is an encounter between minds. Books matter enormously โ but a book cannot entirely replace the ๐น๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ผ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ of a teacher.
Newman speaks beautifully of โthe sympathy of mind with mindโ: the almost intangible communication by which a pupil catches not merely facts, but ways of thinking, judging and loving the truth.
This is why personal influence lies at the heart of education. Newman puts the opposite case with characteristic force: an academic system without the personal influence of teachers upon pupils is โan arctic winter.โ
Education also brings what Newman calls an โenlargement of mindโ โ the ability to see knowledge not as disconnected subjects and facts, but as parts of a greater whole.
And behind all this we might hear Newman's celebrated cardinalatial motto:
