À bientôt ~ “See you in the future” France,

I am so proud of my client Kobi-Lee who achieved her goal to compete in the Virtus Global Games in France.
As a Pioneer ii3 athlete for Virtus Global Games, Kobi-Lee ran and jumped her way to being named the World Champion with three gold medals, as well as a World Record holder in all three events.
This achievement represents so much more than the seconds ran, or distance jumped; it represents perseverance through adversity as a non-verbal Autistic athlete. Perseverance not just this week but throughout her life accessing school, sports and her goals.
This is the first time my client and other Autistic athletes in Australia have had a platform to compete for a medal in parasport in athletics, as Autism is not yet recognised as a (para) category through Athletics Australia.

Virtus Global Games is the world’s largest elite sports event for athletes with an intellectual impairment. Thousands of athletes from Europe, America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania competed across ten main sports.
For me, another big highlight was watching other athletes from across the world compete, particularly the team sport competitions. The talent and sportsmanship was outstanding.

Where too next? We will continue training, And in the meantime, I will continue to increase the understanding, recognition, and inclusion of Autism in sport and the community.
My goal is to see Kobi-Lee returning to France for the Paralympics with the hope that Autism (ii3) becomes included its own category.

Martin Hoffman broke trust with the disability community while CEO of the NDIS, and knowing that he had so much control over your choices was a source of fear for many. His resignation will bring so much relief to the disability community.

Under his leadership, plans were slashed and people were kicked off the NDIS, and thousands of people were forced to fight in courtrooms for the basic supports and services they need.

As if this wasn’t enough, he also led the NDIA’s attempt at forcing through "independent assessments,” causing widespread trauma and distress to thousands of disabled people.

Our community continually attempted to reach out and offer him the opportunity to work with us to . Our offers and solutions were too often met with arrogance and a reflexive dismissal of our lived experience as disabled people.

The next CEO must rebuild this trust. This process will take time and actions will speak louder than words. They must stop the cuts, give people their funding back, and call off the AAT cases that are causing so much stress and pain.

They must also demonstrate a commitment to working with disabled people and our organisations to authentically co-design solutions to . And, ideally, this person will be a disabled person.

[ID: Text reads, 'NDIS CEO has resigned!! Martin Hoffman has resigned this morning after mounting community pressure.' Text is orange, red and white on a black and green background. A black and white image of Hoffman is shown in the top right corner and a clapping emoji is shown between the top and bottom bodies of text.]

A win for Autistics!
I’ve just landed back in Melbourne after two successful days of providing consulting advice to Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) CEO Jacqui Borland, and 30 minutes with Aspects Board.

I don’t take this responsibility and opportunity lightly. This is about giving a voice to the people I serve in my community. Below are a list of the main issues I brought to the table;

* Autism accessibility and identification process' in Hospitals and emergency services, the barriers in the current Mental Health Hospital Assessments process', is clinical therapy the best model for us? And what needs to change for mental health inpatient services?

* The differences in needs and experience of Autistic youth, females vs males, and Autistic Adults including Autistic Parents. And the intersectionality of identity with LGBTQIA+, First Nation, and mental health.

* The NDIS funding process, and access of services

* Child protection and negligence from Housing Services particularly around use of restrictive practices

* The Education Department, policies and the segregation of Special Schools and Mainstream - the positives and barriers, and innovation of alternative models.

* Lived Experience Expertise, where we fit and value through remuneration

* Isolation post lockdown

The two days was such a success Aspect have organised to fly me back up Saturday week to attend their Strategic Workshop. This is where the impact will happen as we’ll strategise together on implementing strategy and operations to what's relevent and needed. Big things happening!

Playing with food can be a healthy way of processing food as long as this feels safe for us. The boy in this video, Liam, has been wrongly referred to as a Fussy eater however there is a difference between picky eaters and fussy eaters. Liam is a picky eater and he has a valid reason to be.
Picky eaters are those with a significantly restricted diet sensory aversions to food due to the sensory processing of the taste, texture, colour, and/or meal routine, and any combination of the above.
A lot of us Autistics are Picky eaters and have 'Pica eating,' which is eating items that are not typically thought of as food and without significant nutritional value, such as Dirt, clay, glue etc. I used to eat the protective foam off the trampoline, I also used to eat a lot of grass, chew and suck my hair and chew my T-shirts etc.
The anxiety of food has been a barrier of me being able to leave my home and I have since developed strategies to work with my restricted eating, and to expand my diet range however this is something that still prompts distress.

ABA and practices of desensitisation therapies even by OT though may show quick 'improvement to the behavior of concern' there is a lot of evidence and actually autistic voices that tell us that these practices are not just ineffective and unhelpful but are harmful and unethical.
My advice if you have someone with an extremely limited diet, is to connect to a neurological dietician who can see if you will benefit from a supplement such as GrowKids to support your child to receive all the essential vitamins minerals ethically etc.
Pica eaters can be supported with zinc. The reason this can be helped with zinc, is as having a zinc deficiency can create a significant distaste for food and can prompt us to develop pica eating. Though this isn't to say that Picky eaters are so because they have a zinc deficiency.
There are reasons for our behavior. Though behaviors can be seen as behaviors of concern, they can be better understood as behaviors of communication to teach what is happening.
