Un bel épisode pour les mathématiques françaises à Philadelphie !

L'IHES, membre fondateur de l'Université Paris-Saclay, a participé au Congrès international des mathématiciens (ICM 2026) sous la bannière Math in France, aux côtés du CNRS, de l' Henri Poincaré, du Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques - Cirm, de MathDoc et du CIMPA - Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées, en association avec France Universités.

Temps fort de cette édition : Hong Wang, professeure permanente à l'IHES et Silver Professor of Mathematics à NYU, a reçu la médaille Fields, la plus haute distinction en mathématiques, pour ses travaux en analyse harmonique, notamment sur la conjecture de Kakeya en dimension trois avec Joshua Zahl.

Elle rejoint ainsi Yu Deng (Université de Chicago), John Pardon (Stony Brook University) et Jacob Tsimerman (Université de Toronto) parmi les lauréats 2026.

La délégation française s'est également retrouvée le 27 juillet au musée Rodin de Philadelphie, sous le patronage de Laurent Bili, Ambassadeur de France aux États-Unis et en présence de Caroline Monvoisin, consule générale de France à Washington DC.

Among his many outstanding contributions is his solution to a longstanding question posed by Mikhail Gromov, Professor Emeritus at IHES.

🏅 Yu Deng, 2026 Fields Medal: "IHES has a perfect atmosphere for research"

Yu Deng's journey with IHES began in July 2018, when he was invited by his postdoctoral mentor Nader Masmoudi to collaborate on problems in inviscid damping. Since then, he has returned to the Institute three times over the past two years.

💬 “The Institute is a very comfortable and relaxing place to work, and there are lots of discussions,” he says.

His exchanges with permanent members such as Laure Saint-Raymond and Thierry Bodineau, and visitors like Clément Mouhot and Toan Nguyen, have enriched his work on the Boltzmann equation and opened up new research directions.

His work focuses on partial differential equations in connection with probability, exploring the role of randomness in the evolution of physical systems, a topic he is presenting at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia.

And the relationship between Yu Deng and IHES is far from over: he will be back at the Institute as early as September.

🏅 Yu Deng, médaille Fields 2026 : « L'IHES a une atmosphère parfaite pour la recherche »

L'aventure de Yu Deng avec l'IHES a débuté en juillet 2018, lorsqu'il a été invité par son mentor postdoctoral Nader Masmoudi à collaborer sur des problèmes d'amortissement non visqueux. Depuis, il est revenu trois fois à l'Institut ces deux dernières années.

💬 "L’Institut est un endroit très confortable et reposant pour travailler, et les discussions y sont nombreuses", dit-il.

Ses échanges avec des membres permanents comme Laure Saint-Raymond et Thierry Bodineau, ou des visiteurs comme Clément Mouhot et Toan Nguyen, ont nourri ses travaux sur l'équation de Boltzmann et ouvert de nouvelles pistes de recherche.

Ses travaux portent sur les équations aux dérivées partielles en lien avec les probabilités, explorant le rôle du hasard dans l'évolution des systèmes physiques, un sujet qu'il présente au Congrès International des Mathématiciens (ICM) à Philadelphie.

Et la relation entre Yu Deng et l'IHES est loin d'être terminée : il sera de retour à l'Institut dès septembre.

🏅 Hong Wang, Permanent Professor at IHES, awarded the 2026 Fields Medal

It's official: at the opening of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia, Hong Wang has just been awarded the Fields Medal, the highest distinction in mathematics.

Hong Wang joined IHES on September 1, 2025 as a Permanent Professor of Mathematics, as part of a joint appointment with the Courant Institute at New York University (NYU).

The award notably recognizes her proof of the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, published with Joshua Zahl, resolving a problem that had remained open for more than a century at the crossroads of harmonic analysis, geometry, and measure theory.

"It is an honor and a privilege to join IHES, where so many great figures in mathematics have worked and proved important theorems," she said upon her appointment.

Following Hugo Duminil-Copin in 2022, this is the second consecutive Fields Medal for a Permanent Professor at IHES.

C'est officiel : à l'ouverture du Congrès international des mathématiciens à Philadelphie, Hong Wang vient de recevoir la médaille Fields, la plus haute distinction en mathématiques.

Hong Wang a rejoint l'IHES le 1er septembre 2025 en tant que professeure permanente de mathématiques, dans le cadre d'un poste joint avec le Courant Institute de New York University (NYU).

Cette récompense lui est notamment décernée pour sa démonstration, avec Joshua Zahl, de la conjecture de Kakeya en dimension trois, un problème ouvert depuis plus d'un siècle, au carrefour de l'analyse harmonique, de la géométrie et de la théorie de la mesure.

« C'est un honneur et un privilège de rejoindre l'IHES, où tant de grandes figures des mathématiques ont travaillé et démontré des théorèmes importants », déclarait-elle lors de sa nomination.

Après Hugo Duminil-Copin en 2022, c'est la deuxième médaille Fields consécutive pour un professeur permanent de l'IHES.

The IHES 2026 Summer School is in full swing!

Until July 17, IHES is hosting the “Cosmological Correlators” Summer School at Bois-Marie, devoted to the study of cosmological correlations in both the early and late universe.

True to its mission of transmitting knowledge, the Institute designed this school first and foremost for the next generation of scientists: PhD students and young postdoctoral researchers from around the world are attending two weeks of lectures given by internationally renowned specialists.

The school features a series of courses taught by world leaders in the field, with the first week focused on EFT and bootstrap methods for computing cosmological correlators, and the second week devoted to more advanced topics and connections at the interface of particle theory and cosmology.

By offering rising scientists an open and inclusive environment for exchange, IHES reaffirms its commitment: to train, support, and inspire those who will shape the physics of tomorrow.

Launch of the collaboration between the Xuemin Institute of Advanced Studies, Fudan University and IHES

On 24 June 2026, IHES welcomed a scientific delegation from the Xuemin Institute of Advanced Studies (Xuemin IAS) at Fudan University, from Shanghai, China. The visit marked the official launch of a collaboration between the two institutions and an opportunity to strengthen their scientific dialogue within the framework of a new program, "Xuemin Rising Stars Program".

The day opened with scientific presentations delivered by three scholars from the delegation: Élie Aïdékon, Professor at the School of Mathematical Sciences at Fudan University, Chris Brav, Professor at the Shanghai Institute for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences (SIMIS), and Satoshi Nawata, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Fudan University.

IHES permanent professors, scientific visitors and young researchers attended the presentations and took part in the discussions that followed - exchanges intended to lay the groundwork for a lasting collaboration.

Following the presentations, IHES and the Xuemin Institute of Advanced Studies signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This collaboration agreement was signed by Emmanuel Ullmo, Director of IHES, and Xiahong Helena Yang, Executive Dean of Xuemin IAS.

The partnership formalizes and sustains scientific exchanges between the two institutions.

IHES is delighted to join Math In France, the shared banner of the French mathematical community at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2026.

From July 23 to 30, Philadelphia will host the ICM, the world's premier mathematics event, bringing together thousands of researchers from across the globe. France, home to a world-renowned mathematical tradition, will be represented under the Math In France banner, led by CNRS together with its partners: IHES, IHP, CIMPA, CIRM, and MathDoc with the support of France Universités.

IHES is particularly proud that Hong Wang, Permanent Professor at the Institute, will deliver a section lecture, and that Dennis Gaitsgory, holder of the Israel Gelfand Chair of Mathematics funded by the Squarepoint Foundation, will give a plenary lecture at ICM 2026.

Our presence at ICM 2026, with a shared booth and an official reception at the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia, will be an opportunity to showcase the excellence and vitality of French mathematical research, along with its best practices and tools. This collective participation is a strong commitment. It reflects our dedication to international scientific cooperation, and academic freedom.
