Hello everyone! 


Do you know the flower called « シャクヤク　SHAKUYAKU » ? 💐
In English it is called « Common Garden Peony (La Pivoine de Chine en français) » 

In Japan, this beautiful and gorgeous flower blooms in May.


There is an expression with this SHAKUYAKU that was born in Edo period.



「立てばシャクヤク、座ればボタン、歩くすがたはユリの花」
(TATEBA SHAKUYAKU, SUWAREBA BOTAN, ARUKU SUGATA WA YURI NO HANA)



Here the verb ば BA form is used which makes a conditional sentence.


「たつ　to stand」→ 「たてば　If one stands」

「すわる　to sit」　→ 「すわれば　If one sits」🧎


SHAKUYAKU is Common Garden Peony ((La Pivoine de Chine), BOTAN is Peony (Pivoine) and YURI is Lily (Lys).


Now, can you guess what this expression from Edo period means???



This is an expression that praises the appearance of a beautiful woman!



« If she stands she is beautiful as a SHAKUYAKU.
If she sits, she is beautiful as a BOTAN.

And her walking appartenance is beautiful as a YURI. » 



Wow! She must be extremely gorgeous!!
