IS STRESS BAD?

Depends how you decide to cope with it – stress activates your endorphins and makes you more alert and helps you cope with demanding periods like exams and coursework deadlines. A little stress is fine but not so much that you have a meltdown. Talk to people and ask how they cope.

Choosing where and what to study in higher education is often stressful for students and parents. A wrong decision can be costly if students choose the wrong course and have to repeat a year - more fees, and an extra year of accommodation and living expenses 📚

I start with psychometric profiling of students' aptitudes, abilities and orientations, advise the best fit offinding work (essential) experience

How to make the best choices on your education pathway?

The Morrisby test is a psychometric tool which helps you to define your career and education pathway. It is not a test which you can ‘pass’ or ‘fail’; it is a ‘profiling’ tool which identifies your strengths, whilst considering what to study, where to study and how to maximise your abilities.

When you complete the document you will receive a report from Morrisby which provides personalised careers and education advice, helping your to choose options and make informed decisions about study pathways and career opportunities.

For younger people, the test takes around 15 minutes; for students aged 15 and over you complete a more comprehensive session that takes around 100 minutes to finish and includes assessments for verbal, numerical, abstract, spatial and mechanical aptitudes.

The profiling identifies what you are good at and offers advice about careers and subjects which are honed to your specific personal qualities.

Morrisby also provide the opportunity to book a 30 minute Skype careers consultation.

The program at International Education and Careers 📚

Session 1 - getting to know the students and their academic aspirations - what do you want to study, where do you want to study (which country) , what qualifications do you need to be admitted 📖

The students will be required to take the Morrisby Profiling Test online (costs around 75 euros and paid directly by the parents to the Morrisby organisation). This is an academic profiling test and indicates the individual student’s academic strengths and weaknesses and suggests the academic pathway for their future studies.

Local students can come to my office here in Biot (or meet at a local hotel) with their parents for each session, other students out of this region can connect with me for academic advice online via Skype or Zoom.

Session 2 – with the Morrisby test results, we can discuss the range university options – which country, which subject to study, importance of work experience.

Session 3 – Once the student knows what and where they want to study, I will help them to complete the personal statements (very important) and complete their online application form(s) – they will usually apply to 4 or 5 universities, sometimes in different countries, to keep their options open.

STUDENTS UNDER STRESS

A recent Natwest Student Study found that 64% of high school and university students rated the stress and anxiety of studying as 7/10; other studies reported significantly more.

The Top 3 sources of stress tend to be: coursework deadlines, exams, balancing study with other commitments.

Here’s what you need to know about managing stress:

Talk and/or write about it, don’t bottle it up. You’ll find most other students are experiencing the same feelings.
Talk to your friends and talk to your tutor
Write down your feelings and emotions

Stay Organized:

Coursework deadlines can be planned on a weekly diary sheet. Manage your time wisely. Don’t leave assessment tasks to the last minute – get a start and you’ll feel you’ve achieved something
Split a task into smaller, more achievable goals
Make time in your schedule to relax and interact with people – create ‘me time’ and socialise.

Look after yourself:
Exercise regularly – find an activity that you like – do sports (and yoga is great for mind and body)
Have good quality sleep and eat healthily
Limit fatty and sugary snacks (helps with concentration in lectures and when revising)
Don’t engage in ‘emotional eating’

Be Mindful:
Be ‘in the moment’ – don’t skim over your environment – pay attention to the world around you.
