"ℍ𝕠𝕨 𝕞𝕦𝕔𝕙 𝕕𝕠𝕖𝕤 𝕚𝕥 𝕥𝕒𝕜𝕖 𝕥𝕠 𝕓𝕖 𝕒𝕓𝕝𝕖 𝕥𝕠 𝕤𝕡𝕖𝕒𝕜 𝔽𝕣𝕖𝕟𝕔𝕙?"

I get this question all the time. And honestly? On its own, it doesn’t really mean anything.

There’s no ready-made answer. No magic number. No neat formula.

Because it depends.

It depends on your motivation.
On how much you actually want to have real conversations.
On the effort you’re willing to put in outside of class.

And what do we even mean by “being able to speak”?

Are we talking about ordering coffee and chatting about the weather?
Or expressing your opinions, your humor, your deeper thoughts?

Those are very different goals.

Yes, you’ll often see numbers online — “X hours to reach this level,” “Y hours to become fluent.” But real life isn’t that simple. Progress isn’t linear, and it’s never just about hours.

I’ve seen people learn very quickly — usually the ones who dare to speak, who don’t wait to be perfect before opening their mouth.

I’ve seen others grow steadily, step by step, little by little — and build something really solid over time.

And yes… I’ve also seen some give up.

At the end of the day, it depends on you.
On the limits you set for yourself — or choose not to set.
On your consistency. Your engagement. Your willingness to stay in the game.

There are no magic wands.
No mathematical shortcuts.

So here’s my advice:

Be patient.

Learning a language takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight.

Just enjoy each step. That’s where the real progress happens.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲

Over the years, I’ve noticed something simple yet powerful with my students:
The moment they start writing, their understanding deepens.

Copying a short text or rewriting a few sentences isn’t just repetition — it’s awareness in action. When you write, you slow down, you notice word order, rhythm, and structure. You begin to see your own mistakes instead of just hearing them.

Research confirms what I’ve seen again and again in class: writing activates several parts of the brain — motor, visual, and language memory — all working together to make new knowledge stick.

So next time you study, don’t just read or listen.
Grab a pen and write... Don't use your computer ! Don't type.

“𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 🇫🇷𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐦 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡 🇪🇸?”

When I taught French at Idyllwild Arts Academy in California, my classes were always small — no more than 8 to 10 students.

Most of my students chose Spanish over French, thinking it was easier. They would say: “At least you write what you pronounce!” And honestly, I couldn’t blame them.
The first time I wrote beaucoup [pronounced bo-kou] on the board, they were completely puzzled. :-)

That’s the thing about French: grammar-wise, it’s not really tougher than Spanish — both are Latin languages, with all their verb conjugations and little rules.
But when it comes to reading and writing, French plays tricks on you:

👉🏽 Silent letters everywhere: beaucoup [bo-ku], fils [fis]

👉🏽 Different spellings for the same sound: eau, au, o

👉🏽 And of course, the mysterious liaison: les amis → [lez-ami]

I always tell my students that with a bit of practice and repetition, they’ll get used to it.
Once you spot the patterns - which happen quickly - everything becomes clearer — and ultimately, it' worth it! 😃🇫🇷

C’est un film français que je te recommande vivement.

Il est réalisé par Jacques Audiard. Ça raconte l’histoire d’un jeune gars, Malik, qui se retrouve en prison à 19 ans. Au début, il est complètement perdu, il connaît personne, il doit apprendre à survivre dans un univers hyper violent, en s’alliant avec un clan corse.

Petit à petit, il devient plus malin, il se débrouille et finit par se construire son propre réseau. On le voit vraiment évoluer, c’est super bien fait et Tahar Rahim est incroyable dedans.

It’s a film that I highly recommend.

It was directed by Jacques Audiard. It tells the story of a young guy, Malik, who ends up in prison at 19. At first, he’s totally lost, doesn’t know anyone, and has to figure out how to survive in this violent world by getting involved with a Corsican gang.

Little by little, he gets smarter, learns how to handle things, and ends up building his own network. You really see how he changes — it’s really well done and Tahar Rahim is amazing in it.
