What a wonderful week we spent with Chloe and her family in the Dordogne!

My husband and I are at slightly different levels in our learning of French but every morning Chloe managed to design and deliver lessons that engaged and developed both of us. I particularly valued the time she spent at my request trying to correct my pronunciation – communication is so much easier if I can speak intelligibly! The emphasis on everyday spoken French is so much more useful when it comes to actually conversing with French people in France, than the written French that schools teach).

Our official lessons were just a part of our learning, though. Being immersed in the daily life of the family gave us many opportunities throughout each day to listen and take part in the family conversations about daily life. I found it particularly valuable to be conversing with several different people – in a school environment, one gets used to the teacher’s voice and s/he gets used to your own peculiarities, but in real life it is necessary to talk to all kinds of people.

We were very lucky to be there when both Chloe’s mother (Marie-Paule) and Laurent’s mother (Jaqueline) were staying with the family. Everyone was so welcoming and inclusive, and willingly to take the time to chat with us about all kinds of topics. Laurent was so patient and kind, making sure we understood and were happy with everything, and even little Cassandre taught me what a ‘bourdon’ is.

Living with the family gave us opportunities to learn about French culture and society as well as language, both from watching the family and by asking our questions. We enjoyed walks in the area, a visit to Chateau Hautefort, a morning at the market in Terrasson, swimming in the river, and a visit to Montignac. My husband was absolutely thrilled to be able to enter a local petanque competition with Laurent as team-mate – a dream come true for him.
The meals were tasty and nourishing, and it was a delight to share them with the family. We even got to enjoy Marie-Paule’s famous clafouti.

Paul and Jeanne - From New Zealand
Classes are in a dedicated room. Chloé’s whiteboard board is effective for writing as necessary. Each day involved a number of exercises and the time passed quickly. Brief conversation starters were effective at getting me talking so Chloé could identify areas needing work. Overall lessons were challenging, but very well pitched to move me along, with just enough challenge to balance progress.

We revised a number of things I had previously learned, but which just eluded me when i needed to speak: passé composé, future proche, réflexive verbes and négative expressions

We practiced pronunciation: nasal sounds an, on, in, [ i ] [ y] [u] the difference betwen [y] and [oe], mute ‘e’ and ‘ss’. I learned about Enchainement, and revised Liaison. I read simple phrases then Chloé dictated phrases so i could practice picking out the words.

Over the week I listened to 3 different audios which helped me realise how important it is in future to listen and relisten to audios to pick up words, before i read the text.

We studied temporal words pendant, depuis, dans, en, il y a… que and ça fait… que

I learned vocabulary. Words that came up in class conversations but also nouns for the house and adjectives. The little picture cards imprinted the words immediately on my brain. SO effective.

I thoroughly enjoyed my classes with Chloé. She is professional and encouraging.

Fortunately for me both Chloé and Laurent’s mothers were staying on holiday so I got to speak to them at meals and at other times when we just happened to be sitting around the outdoor dining area. Chloé’s mum, Marie-Paul was particulary supportive and spoke clearly to me, gently corrected errors or providing missing words for me.

Laurent is especially good at explaining a wide variety of situations and expressing his views simply. He did this often, both on outings to the swimming hole and Abbey and also about the house. I appreciate that this requires a huge amount of patience, so I am very greatful to him. By the end of the week I felt I could understand alot of what was said directly to me, which was a big improvement from my arrival.

I got to listen to 4 year old Cassandra alot. Her speech wasn’t as clear as adults but her interactions with family and a kitten were often repeated, and i could understand her better as the week progressed.

I had brief conversations with several people in Beauregard when my husband and I went for walks – the shop keeper and several people chatting over their front fence. We also briefly met Laurent’s dad and a family friend was at breakfast one morning.

I would definitely recommend this kind of stay. Apart from learning language we learned quite a bit about living and eating in this part of France. My one regret was that i didn’t have access to Chloé, Marie-Paul, Laurent (all sympathetic listeners) for another week to just converse with as I feel I had just go to the stage where I could think and talk in simple sentences at the end of the week.

Andrea - from USA
This immersion course exceeded my expectations. The professionalism of Chloé was extraordinary. She was able to recognize my weaknesses and help me concentrate on those areas.

She kept the lessons very interesting by using several different types of media, including flashcards, picture cards, video, games, fill-in-the- blank answers and numerous other techniques which kept my interest and desire for more. Needless to say, class was very interesting and never boring!

She and her husband have renovated century-old buildings including a spectacular yoga studio and an open-air kitchen and dining area where meals were served day and night. Family and friends joined the table for meals where french conversation continued till the sun went down. There were always small children speaking french and playing together (so cute!) ; the atmosphere was always happy ;-)

My private room and bath was more than spacious with a sumptuous bath tub and huge windows in both rooms that welcomed cool evening breezes and countryside fresh air. It was lovely.

On several occasions we went into town; once to the open air market with hundreds of food vendors, once to have a cool drink next to the river and once to experience excellent pizza! They also took me to a beautiful cool river place to swim but I’m a bit squeamish in swimming areas, so I did not go int he water.

Her husband supports Chloe in her work and they share a very special relationship of love and respect. Their little 4-year-old daughter is too precious for words!

I highly recommend Chloe and this experience in one of the most beautiful areas in Dordogne.
