🌍 What happens when students around the world analyse the same particle physics data, together, across 24 hours?

That’s World Wide Data Day (W2D2)!

On 10 November, students from around the world will work with real data from the Large Hadron Collider, analysing particle collision events and investigating what the data can tell them. 🔬

What makes W2D2 unique is its global format: as the day moves across time zones, groups of students take part one after another, connecting through a continuous global videoconference to share their results, questions and experiences. 🌎

W2D2 is an activity developed by QuarkNet and supported by the international particle physics outreach community.

🚀 It’s World Space Week!

Space may seem far away, but particles from the Universe are constantly reaching us here on Earth.

Through activities such as the International Cosmic Day, students can detect cosmic rays, study atmospheric muons, analyse data and experience how scientists investigate the Universe. 🌌🔬

Because sometimes, you don't need to look into space to explore it, you just need to detect what reaches you.

Representatives from 10 African countries, namely, South Africa, Namibia, Ghana, Madagascar, Rwanda, Zambia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tunisia, and Egypt are gathering in Nairobi, Kenya, under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to establish a regional network to advance secondary school education and outreach in nuclear science and technology. The regional meeting that is scheduled from 31 August until 4 September was opened by Prof Shaukat Abdulrazak, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Dr Gillian Arendse, Manager for Communication and Stakeholder Relations at NRF-iThemba LABS and the SA-representative of the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG), represented the interests of South Africa at the meeting.

Dr Arendse was elected to serve on the steering committee of the newly established African Network for Nuclear Science Education and Outreach (ASEN) to oversee the activities of the working group responsible for educator capacity building. He will also serve as the South African focal point to position nuclear science education and outreach within secondary schools as an enabler that unlocks opportunities for the next generation.

During IPPOG Cosmic Days activity, students and teachers discover the world of cosmic rays through hands-on activities, data analysis and discussions with scientists.

From particles travelling through space to detectors on Earth, Cosmic Days are an opportunity to experience particle physics and astroparticle physics first-hand. 🔬✨

Curiosity starts with looking up at the sky and sometimes, the Universe comes straight to your detector.
