P. Higgs never expected to become famous. In 1964, he proposed an elegant solution to one of particle physics' biggest puzzles. ~fifty years later, the discovery of the earned him the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with François Englert. His story reminds us that curiosity, patience and collaboration are at the heart of scientific discovery.

Before it was discovered, it was just an idea. In 1964, several physicists, including Higgs, proposed a revolutionary idea: a new field filling the Universe could explain why fundamental particles have mass.
At the time, it was only a theory.

Without the Higgs field, many fundamental particles would have no mass.
