Who defines a “legitimate” economic policy?

▶️ Lecture 3 of the COST Action CA23149 Autumn 2026 Lecture Series is now available on YouTube.

In “The Architecture of Legitimation,” Asst. Prof. Sevil Zengin Gupta examines how the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) shaped UK business discourse between 2016 and 2024.

The lecture explores the CBI as an epistemic gatekeeper, examining how corporate priorities translate into narratives of economic necessity, public value, and societal benefit.

From Brexit and COVID-19 to energy and governance crises, the presentation traces how business rhetoric shifts between risk, resilience, opportunity, growth, and long-term industrial strategy.

It also examines how ethos, logos and pathos work together to legitimise policy positions and influence the boundaries of public debate.

In “Digital Resistance: Communication Strategies Against Anti-Gender Narratives in CEE and NME Countries,” Dr. Selvi Vural explores communication strategies across Central and Eastern European and Neighbouring and Mediterranean contexts.
Drawing on an organisational and communication perspective, the lecture considers the role of inclusive leadership, gender representation, and civil-society communication, and discusses how research can contribute to the development of digital counter-narrative strategies.

How do anti-gender movements in Asian contexts differ from the European experience?

In the opening lecture of the COST Action CA23149 Autumn 2026 Lecture Series, Dr. Bishnu Prasad Mohapatra of Dr. Viswanath Karad MIT-World Peace University explores anti-gender mobilisation, authoritarian politics, democratic backsliding, and political inclusion across Asian contexts.

The lecture considers examples from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and China, asking how democratic institutions and spaces for political participation can respond to restrictive political environments and strengthen social and political inclusion.

🎓 The Autumn 2026 Lecture Series is now underway.

COST Action CA23149 “Democratisation at Stake: Comparing Anti-Gender Politics” brings together international scholars and experts for a new online lecture series running from September to December 2026.

Across the series, speakers will explore questions related to anti-gender mobilisation, democratic backsliding, political and social inclusion, digital communication, public policy, law, higher education and online deliberation.

💻 The programme combines live online lectures via Zoom with pre-recorded presentations.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the video capsule project "Researchers in Dialogue: Understanding Anti-Gender Politics" created by Marie Ruiz (Université de Picardie Jules Verne) and Anya Kuteleva (University of Wolverhampton) 📣 . The project features brief interviews with researchers across the network and presents them through an interactive map. This allows viewers to explore contributions geographically across Europe.

From 17 to 19 June 2026, COST Action CA23149 Working Group 3, “Rethinking Activism and Forms of Opposition with a Focus on Unexpected Allies,” organised a panel at the final conference of the RESIST project in Warsaw.

The panel explored everyday LGBTQ+ struggles and resistance under political heterosexism, bringing together the voices of LGBTQ+ individuals, activists, and researchers working on LGBTQ+ issues and anti-gender mobilisation.

With contributions from Dr Michal Pitoňák, Dr Shaba Darakchi, and Dr Veronika Valkovičová, the discussion addressed anti-gender and anti-LGBTQ+ campaigns, conditional tolerance, structural cis- and heteronormativity, and the importance of recognising everyday forms of resistance.

Thank you to the speakers, organisers, and participants for this important exchange. 🌿

On the 28th and 29th of May the workshop "Mapping Actors and Transnational Networks in Anti-Gender Mobilizations" took place at the University of Helsinki 👏 . For one and a half days, 15 participants presented and discussed their work in interactive sessions geared towards the preparation of a special issue. The program also included a roundtable with scholars researching anti-gender politics in Finnish institutions.
We want to thank the organizers Susana Galán, Sarka Kolmasova, Marianna Muravyeva, Didem Unal Abaday and Yuliya Brin for their efforts and time.

📢 Call for Papers: Historicizing the Migration / Anti-Gender Nexus

We invite scholars to submit proposals for a workshop taking place in Amiens, France, on 24–25 September 2026.

The workshop will examine the historical entanglements between migration and anti-gender politics, with attention to questions of mobility, gender backlash, women’s autonomy, sexuality, reproduction, family structures, labour, nationalism, colonial and imperial contexts, and broader social transformation.

We welcome interdisciplinary, comparative, transnational, intersectional, and longue durée perspectives, particularly from historians and scholars working across migration studies, gender studies, political history, historical sociology, cultural studies, geography, and related fields.

📌 Submission deadline: 15 June 2026
📌 Notification of results: End of June 2026
📌 Submission format: 300–500 word abstract and short biographical note

CA23149 invites senior researchers to contribute to capacity building by mentoring Young Researchers and Innovators working on anti-gender politics, democracy, equality, and related fields.

Mentors may support YRIs with career planning, publication development, book or special issue proposals, manuscripts, and project applications connected to CA23149’s aims.

Mentoring is confidential, supportive, and based on mutual agreement. Sessions are usually held online in 1 to 3 private meetings, with more possible if needed.
