Watercolor Practice: Creating Harmony and Rendering Depth
Online Course with Pauline Bétrancourt
Sundays, November 22nd, November 29th, December 6th, December 13th - 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Watercolor can be both fun and challenging. The fluidity of the medium can lead to many surprises!
As artists we benefit from welcoming them, while gaining control over the effect of water and learning how to mix colors. This online course will help you to focus on your perception of value, color, and light. Hands-on exercises will allow you to review foundational principles of color theory as you work from great artworks.
You will learn how to create a color harmony in order to render a world with volume and depth.
Join this new online class with artist and educator Pauline Bétrancourt. She will teach you to gain confidence and how to be looser as you explore new possibilities with watercolor. Through exercises, keen observations, and group discussions, you will work on what may feel more truthful to your work and organic to your process. Art making is a corporeal practice grounded in sensation. You will have the opportunity to develop mindfulness as you create — unifying in one movement your perception, emotion, and spirit.

"The Leo Marchutz School of Painting & Drawing summer program was a really transformative experience I recommend to artists of all skill levels. It is an opportunity to live and explore a beautiful little town in the south of France. There is so much to see and do and the locals are so fun making it a great place to learn the French language and become really immersed in the culture. There is something for everyone to learn -- from the basics of color theory and mixing, to techniques for plein air painting. Additionally, it is an opportunity to learn art history by experiencing much of the art you will learn about in person and really dissecting the works and lives of famous artists. You will learn and form relationships with like minded people, people with more experience, less experience, and very knowledgeable people. It is really the experience of a lifetime!" - Isabella, former high school summer student

"Painting in Venice, a wondrous, rather other-worldly place can only be enhanced by being a part of a this program. The warmth and camaraderie of the faculty is palpable and enveloping creating a welcoming, engaging atmosphere for learning, painting, seeing, growing, in the company of other interested artists. If you can, don't hesitate, do it." - Sharon, Venice 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026 participant
