Shark & Ray Day at ISS! 🦈🌊

ISS celebrated its fourth annual Shark & Ray Day, led by our student-led Mata Ni Ua Ocean Club.

Coinciding with World Manta Ray Day, students enjoyed quizzes, games and species identification challenges while learning more about sharks, rays and the importance of protecting our oceans.

A special vinaka to Luke Gordon from the Manta Trust for sharing his knowledge of manta rays with our students.

Mata Ni Ua students also sold their own badges, keychains and stickers, with funds raised supporting Fiji Sharks Lab’s shark adoption programme.

Yesterday, ISS was delighted to welcome representatives from St Kilda Football Club, an Australian Rules Football club from Melbourne, to our campus.
More than 30 students from Years 6–11 joined the session, learning about Aussie Rules, hearing how elite athletes train during the season, and taking part in an engaging Q&A.
Students then headed out to the field to put their learning into action, practising two of the key skills of the game - handballing and kicking.
A big thank you to Eddie and Tricia from St Kilda FC for spending time with our students and delivering such an enjoyable and interactive session.
We’re also excited to share that Australian Rules Football will be offered as a new After-School Activity in Term 4, delivered by a coach from AFL Fiji in partnership with the Fiji National Sports Commission.

Year 3 Camp | What an Adventure!

Our Year 3 students embraced adventure, independence and new experiences during their recent camp in Navua.

From conquering the rapids at Navua River Tubing and singing together along the river, to learning to look after themselves and enjoying their first sleepover away from home, our students stepped outside their comfort zones and made memories to last.

A special highlight was connecting with the Class 3 students at Lomary Primary.

Through games, stories, laughter and shared experiences, our students had the opportunity to build new friendships, learn from one another and celebrate the joy of learning and growing together.

A few brave hearts, plenty of laughter, new friendships and wonderful memories. Our Year 3s certainly went and conquered!

Vinaka vakalevu to everyone who helped make this camp such a meaningful and memorable experience.

Learning. Leading. Creating.

Our Design Student-Led Conferences were a wonderful celebration of creativity, confidence and connection.

Students welcomed their families into our Ceramic Studio and Polymer Clay Jewellery experiences, taking on the role of teacher as they shared the techniques, processes and skills they had developed throughout their units.

By teaching others, students were able to reflect on their learning, demonstrate their practical skills and confidently share the knowledge they had gained. Families also became part of the experience, creating alongside their children and seeing their learning in action.

A meaningful way to celebrate student agency, learning and achievement as our Design units came to a close.

Finding Their Voice Through Poetry

Last evening our Year 10 Language and Literature students took the stage for a special Poetry Slam evening.

Each student bravely performed an original poem, using creativity and passion to explore important and topical issues that matter to them.

With just 2–3 minutes to share their work, students stepped in front of an audience of peers, parents and guardians, and teachers, showcasing their confidence and powerful voices.

It was inspiring to see our students express themselves through poetry and share their ideas, perspectives and creativity with the ISS community.

Today, our early years students welcomed their dads, family members and caregivers into their classrooms for a special Father’s Day celebration.

It was a lovely morning of sharing their learning spaces, painting, reading books and creating activities together. More than anything, it was about spending quality time with the special people who support, encourage and care for our little learners everyday.

Sharks, Rays and Learning Beyond the Classroom

Last week, our Mata Ni Ua students had an incredible opportunity to step beyond the classroom and visit Fiji Shark Lab, where they discovered more about some of Fiji’s fascinating sharks and rays.

Through this hands-on learning experience, students explored shark and ray biology, their vital role in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems, the threats these species face, and the important conservation work happening right here in Fiji.

At ISS, we believe learning comes alive when students can connect their classroom knowledge with the world around them. This experience gave our Mata Ni Ua students the opportunity to ask questions, deepen their understanding and develop a greater appreciation for the marine environment that surrounds us.
And the learning doesn’t stop at the lab!

In the coming weeks, our students will put their learning into action as they prepare presentations for Sharks and Rays Day. They will share their knowledge with others, raise awareness and help highlight why protecting these incredible animals is so important for the future of our oceans.
