🇵🇬 Papua New Guinea is breaking new ground in making financial services safer for everyone.

Financial abuse happens when someone controls or misuses another person’s money, accounts or access to financial services. It can include taking wages, controlling bank accounts or preventing them from paying for basic needs.

The impacts can be devastating, leaving people with fewer options to escape violence, support their families or rebuild their lives.

Led by the Bank of Papua New Guinea, banks, superannuation funds and other financial institutions have come together to develop a shared response.

The result is the PNG Empower Finance Code, signed by the Bank of Papua New Guinea and 12 financial institutions.

The Code considers PNG’s culture, communities and financial system. It was shaped by the experiences of victim-survivors and customers, alongside practical testing by participating institutions.

IFC, with support from the Australian Government, is helping put the Code into action.

As more financial services move online, PNG is showing how strong local leadership and partnership across the financial sector can better protect customers and communities. 🤝🏦📱

🌊 Alii from Palau! 🇵🇼 What a remarkable few days it has been here at the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting 🏛️
It has been a privilege to engage with leaders, government representatives, and partners from across the Pacific — hearing directly from those who are shaping the future of this extraordinary region.🤝

World Bank Group representatives Carlos Felipe Jaramillo (Vice President, East Asia Pacific), Tatiana Proskuryakova (Division Director, North and South Pacific) and Keiko Miwa (IFC Director for Asia and the Pacific) participated in rich conversations ranging from climate resilience 🌿 and ocean sustainability 🐠 to energy security ⚡ and inclusive economic growth 📈.

A heartfelt thank you to Pacific Islands Forum Secretary-General Baron Waqa, Pacific leaders and representatives and partners for this shared space and time together. Creating more jobs and stronger economies starts with investing in children's health.

In Majuro, Christina is raising her four-year-old grandson, Riley. Through the Marshall Islands Early Childhood Development Project, families like hers are receiving support with food, health care, school needs, and the everyday costs of raising young children.
When children are healthy and well-nourished, they're better able to learn, build skills, and grow into productive adults.

These investments in early childhood help create the workforce that drives economic growth, creates jobs, and builds more resilient communities.

Today, 72% of children under two receive regular checkups, 2,400+ families receive cash transfers, and parent educators support early learning at home.

The World Bank Group is proud to support the Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands as it invests in children, families, and the country's future.

Around the world, we are investing in digital connectivity that helps small businesses grow, trade and support jobs.

In FSM, digital improvements have reached more than 100,000 people, or 88 percent of the population, with women making up half of those reached.

Merlinda can now order supplies online and sell locally made products to customers beyond the island.
