Pacific Islands Forum Women Leaders Meeting β Youth Dialogue Participation of Students with Disabilities from the Disability Resource Centre.
In a historic first, students with disabilities and their buddies from the University of the South Pacific (USP) Disability Resource Centre were invited to attend the Pacific Islands Forum Women Leaders Meeting (PIFWLM) Youth Dialogue today. Held at the Forum Secretariat Main Conference Room, the dialogue centered on the theme, βYouth Voices, Shared Leadership for a Prosperous Blue Pacific Continent.β
The participating students included Emma Vakabu, Jabiz Manaika, Neomai Marama, David Gucake, Ratu Mesake Vakawaletabua, Anmol Ram, Kelera Ratunaqele, Ana Wainiu, and Catherine Singh. During the Youth Dialogue, Emma Vakabu served as a panelist to discuss the challenges and lived experiences of youths with disabilities accessing mental health support. In her remarks, she shed light on critical barriers in Pacific communities, including the lack of accessible mental health information for youths with disabilities, the need for disability inclusive training for mental health professionals, and physically inaccessible service provider facilities. To address these gaps, Emma emphasized the urgent need for collaboration between governments and relevant partners to improve mental health support services for youth with disabilities.
For the rest of the student delegation, attending this high-level meeting was an eye-opening experience that highlighted the vital importance of youth participation. The discussions brought real life social issues to the forefront, proving how collaborative regional approaches can drive meaningful change. The event also provided a unique space for the students to connect with Ministers and government representatives from across the region.
The Disability Resource Centre and students express their sincere gratitude to the PIFS Social Policy team for this incredible opportunity and anticipate future workshops designed to empower youths, particularly youths with disabilities.
