From Fiji to the Stars: USP Student Selected as IAAC Ambassador.

The universe has always been a source of curiosity for USP Mathematics and Physics student Niyate Lal, and now she will have the opportunity to share that curiosity with students across Fiji.
Niyate has been selected as an official Ambassador for the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition (IAAC), an international educational science competition that challenges students around the world to explore astronomy and astrophysics beyond the classroom.
The appointment builds on an exciting year in astronomy for Niyate. In the 2026 IAAC, she received a National Award for Fiji and reached the Final Round, placing among the top 15% of approximately 9,100 participants worldwide.
As an IAAC Ambassador, Niyate will help introduce more students to astronomy and astrophysics, promote participation in international opportunities, and support activities that encourage young people to explore science. Her plans include astronomy talks, information sessions, telescope observation nights and opportunities for students to connect with the wider astronomy community.
For Niyate, the goal goes beyond competition. It is about helping students in Fiji realize that the universe is not something distant or inaccessible. It is something they can question, explore and study.

Saakshi Ashlyne Goundar a Bachelor of Science graduate with majors in Mathematics and Physics and a Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of the South Pacific Laucala Campus has attained a major international recognition after being awarded with the Silver Honour in the Global Quantum Mechanics Challenge 2026. The Global Quantum Mechanics Challenge is initiated and coordinated by Edu. Harbour, a science education platform. The competition is run by an international organizing team of coordinators, contributors, and ambassadors, with most core team members based in Hamburg, Germany.

Ms Goundar a first-year teacher in the Mathematics and Physics department at Natabua High School in Lautoka was amongst the 4,500 students worldwide who took part in this online contest. After successfully completing the preliminary rounds and the semi-final she was one of the 400 students who qualified for the finals. The culmination of the competition saw Saakshi finishing in the rank of top 40. For her remarkable performance along with the Silver Honour, she received the National Award Fiji for achieving the nationwide highest score in the final round of the Global Quantum Mechanics Challenge 2026.

"It's going to be scary at first, but the most important step is always the first one."

This was the message from Fiavivini William Ah Young, who graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering at our Laucala Graduation today.

The 23-year-old from Lotopa, Samoa, shared his excitement as years of dedication finally came to fruition.

"At the moment, I am feeling ecstatic. It has been a long time coming after spending four and a half years here. Everyone faces challenges throughout those four and a half years, but the main thing is making sure you know what you want at the end. That pushed me to finish the last leg of the race," he said.

Reflecting on his journey, Ah Young said he had to step out of his comfort zone while living away from home.

"I think the biggest challenge was just keeping motivated throughout these past few years. Having a good community around you really helps," he shared.

"The atmosphere at USP is very lively; you won't feel lonely. You'll meet new people, new faces, and make new best friends and family. It's going to be scary at first, especially for Samoans, as we are always raised close to family. However, even though it was only me here with no relatives, I was able to form a strong bond with the Samoan community here."

STEMP Postgraduate Evening 2026 🎓

STEMP was delighted to bring together our postgraduate students, academic staff, research leaders, and administrative and support colleagues for our Postgraduate Evening 2026, held on Thursday, 6 August, under the theme:

“Your Postgraduate Journey: Connect • Grow • Succeed.”

Following the opening address by Deputy Head of School (Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Affairs), Associate Professor Surya Prakash, the Head of School (STEMP), Professor Bibhya Sharma, welcomed our postgraduate students and encouraged them to make the most of their postgraduate journey, engage actively with the School’s academic and research community, and take advantage of the opportunities and support available to them.

The evening provided an opportunity for our postgraduate community to connect, learn and engage through discussions on postgraduate programmes and academic expectations, student support services, research resources, ethics and integrity, research writing and publications, research grants, and emerging research directions across STEMP.

Our Research Cluster Leaders also shared current and emerging areas of research, highlighting opportunities for postgraduate students to become more actively involved in the School’s research community.

Most importantly, the evening was about building connections and reminding our students that postgraduate study is a journey supported by a wider community of supervisors, academics, professional staff and fellow researchers.

A sincere vinaka vakalevu to everyone who presented, organised, supported and participated in the evening—and especially to our postgraduate students for their enthusiastic participation and engagement.

We look forward to continuing to strengthen our postgraduate community and making the event even bigger and better in 2027!

STEMP Orientation 2026.

The School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics (STEMP) proudly welcomed its newest cohort of first-year students during the Semester 2, 2026 Orientation held on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, at the AusPAC 001 Lecture Theatre.
Students were warmly welcomed by the Deputy Head of School, Professor M. G. M. Khan, who introduced the School, outlined academic expectations, and encouraged students to embrace the many opportunities available throughout their university journey. The programme also featured a presentation by Prithvi Narayan from Student Learning Support (SLS), highlighting the range of academic services available to help students develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed.
The Orientation concluded with an inspiring message from Sunaina Nair, the First-Year Experience Coordinator, who reminded students that USP is not only about earning a qualification but also about discovering their potential, building meaningful connections, and growing into future leaders. Students were encouraged to remain curious, embrace every opportunity, ask questions, and seek support whenever needed, knowing that the entire STEMP community is committed to their success.
As our newest STEMP students embark on this exciting journey, we wish them every success in Semester 2, 2026, and throughout their academic journey at USP.

Honoring a Legacy: University of the South Pacific Receives Generous Donation of Scientific Library.

The Mathematics and Physics disciplines from the School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics at the University of the South Pacific held a very successful commemorative ceremony on Wednesday, 1st July, to honor the life and scientific contributions of the late Dr. Stephen William Goulter (1948–2013).

Dr. Goulter was a distinguished meteorologist, climatologist, and mathematician whose career spanned decades in New Zealand, making significant contributions to the understanding of regional climates and agricultural meteorology. His pioneering work, including foundational studies on regional climate patterns and frost occurrence, remains a vital resource for environmental scientists and researchers today.

In a gesture of immense generosity, Dr. Goulter’s family has donated a significant portion of his personal library to the staff of the Mathematics and Physics disciplines. This collection of academic texts serves as important resource for staff and students, fostering a deeper engagement with the mathematical foundations of environmental science.

In welcoming the attendees to the event, the master of ceremony, Mr. Gabiriele Bulivou mentioned that this was a first of its kind for the school of STEMP, where such a donation of books have been received.

"This donation enables our staff to access fundamental knowledge in mathematical and physical principles and theories which have been accumulated over time.” said Professor Bibhya Sharma, the Head of School for STEMP. "By making these works accessible, we are ensuring that Dr. Goulter's passion for scientific discovery continues to inspire new researchers here in USP."

The Mathematics Discipline Coordinator Dr. Avinesh Prasad thanked the Goulter family for this kind donation and said, “By sharing these resources with USP, you are directly supporting our mission to empower the people of the South Pacific with world-class education.”

“To understand the impact of this gift, we must look beyond the physical volumes and see them as the tools of a lifelong intellectual journey.” said Mrs. Sush*ta Sharma from the Mathematics Discipline. She highlighted that the school is honored to be the stewards of this knowledge, and they look forward to seeing the new ideas, the new research, and the new insights that will inevitably grow from these pages received today.

The ceremony was also attended online by the Goulter family, and concluded with a Book Exhibition where attendees had the opportunity to view the donated Goulter collection and celebrate the enduring legacy of a dedicated scientist.

The Mathematics and Physics disciplines express their sincere gratitude to the Goulter family for this significant gift to our academic community, which will support our students and staff for years to come.
