Sandalwood - Santalum yasi
$5 per plant, pb5 bags
Sandalwood is prized for its sweet smelling wood and commonly used as incense or perfume around the world. For wood with high levels of fragrance oils, the tree must be at least 40 years of age. However sandalwood can be harvested at the age of 25 years with substantial heart wood development, and still fetch a decent price due to the high demand for real sandalwood.
Relative Information: The sandalwood tree is a hemi-parasitic plant, meaning it will attach its roots to other plants to take nutrients and minerals since it cannot do so by itself. Therefore, growing a host plant beside a sandalwood tree is needed.
Suitable Host Plants: Citrus species a great hosts for sandalwood, Acacia trachycarpa, Calliandra calothyrsus, and Casuarina equisetifolia. You can also use a raintree or drumstick tree, just dig up a hole a little bit away from the drip line of the tree until you get to its root and plant the sandalwood directly on top to ensure that it will attach itself to it host.

Red fire chilli - Capsicum spp.
$4 per plant, pb5.
Typically a warm weather plant, chilli plants are sun lovers, requiring plenty of warmth and light for peppers to ripen. Requiring rich, well-draining soils. Chilli plants prefer top dry bottom moist, as long as water is not allowed to stagnate in the ground.
Chilli plants grow fruits on its side stems, so the more side stems your plant has, the more fruits it will produce. If grown in a pot, simply tip the pot to the side, the pepper plant will then try to grow towards the light – hence more offshoots of side stems. This method can be repeated until you are satisfied with the amount of side stem growth.
When watering any Capsicum plant, try to avoid water from settling on the leaves as it will encourage rot. Aim to only water the ground around the plant, keeping the soil moist. Mulching the base of the plant will help greatly with retaining moisture. Chilli grows well in partial shade, which will allow it to get a decent amount of fruit. But 5-6 hours of sunlight per day of sunlight will get a full load of full-sized chilli.

Mondo grass – Ophiopogon japonicas
$3 per plant
Also known as monkey grass or dwarf lily-turf, it is an evergreen perennial that makes great ground-cover or as a standalone grass-like plant. Commonly used as growth in between “stepping-stone” type pathways, or as border edgings for driveways and gardens.
These plants perform well in almost any soil-type as long as it is well draining (poor drainage exposes the roots to rot). These grasses love partial to full shade, but can be grown in full sun as well, provided there is sufficient water. Very easy to manage and drought tolerant plants, so little care is needed for them to grow.
If looking to cover a specific area with these, space each plant about 10-15cm apart from each other, they will grow in clumps and fill up the spaces in between within a year. Becoming full and dense at around 2 years.

Jade Vine - Strongylodon macrobotrys
$50 per plant
Originating from the Philippines, and known also as the emerald creeper, these leguminous perennial woody vines bloom in the spring and summer, and produce long, dangling clusters of pale green-blue flowers shaped like claws. These clusters hold around 75 or more flowers in them, with the cluster sometimes reaching up to 3 metres long. The Jade Vine is considered an endangered species due to the destruction of its habitat and the decrease of its natural pollinators. It is a prized plant in gardens for its showy flowers and highly unusual colour.

Fiji Sago Palm - Metroxylon vitiense
$5 per plant (each plant is about 1 ft. tall)
The Fiji Sago Palm is an endemic and endangered Fijian Palm. Its leaves are traditionally used for the thatching of roofs for Bures’ and the core of the trunk harvested for its Palm Heart, as food. The Sago palm is a monocarpic palm, which differs from most palms in the manner in which they produce fruit. Only when the palm is 15-20 years old does it produce a large flowering structure above where the fruit will develop. As the fruit mature, the leaves die, the fruit drop and then the adult palm dies. The long lifespan, late maturity and reproductive method of sago renders even large populations susceptible to sudden and dramatic disturbances.

Neem Tree – Azadirachta Indica
Small Neem Tree plants for sale:
1 for $5 or 2 for $8
Native to the Indian sub-continent, it is a tree with a wide range of uses. The oil (extracted mainly from seeds) is used as an insecticide, fungicide as well as a natural insect repellent. The leaves, when mashed into a paste, can be used as a skin treatment, primarily for fungus, warts or chicken pox. Typically having a few Neem trees in your garden, close to your balcony is usually enough to deter those annoying mosquitoes while enjoying an afternoon drink outside. (Otherwise, crunch up some Neem leaves.)
Soil: The Neem tree can grow in almost any soil type, provided that there is proper drainage. Poorly drained soil will weaken the tree during wet periods, make sure that the plant is not located at the bottom of a slope or a spot where water usually puddles during rain. The roots need to be allowed to breathe, swampland is a big no-no for Neem trees.
Light and Water: Neem trees love the sun, make sure it is in a spot where it will receive full exposure throughout the day. Young neem trees can’t really handle the shade. A good amount of water is good when growing neem trees but they can still grow well with very little. Only water constantly if the soil conditions allow for proper drainage, wet-feet will weaken the tree and make it susceptible to slugs.
