The Ministry of Education remains firmly committed to ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for every learner in Fiji, particularly children living with disabilities.
While speaking in Parliament, I reaffirmed that inclusive education is a national priority aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 and Fijiβs commitments under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This approach is grounded in the belief that every child has the right to access quality education without barriers.
For the 2025β2026 financial year, over $1.07 million has been allocated to support Special and Inclusive Education (SIE) programmes. Currently, 1,253 students are enrolled in 18 special schools nationwide, with additional support provided through the SIE Grant, starting at $500 per child and increasing based on the level of disability.
Encouragingly, access to inclusive education continues to grow. Student participation has increased from 2,295 in 2024 to 2,812 in 2026, while the number of schools implementing inclusive education has risen from 214 in 2024 to 378 in 2025, including rural and maritime communities.
The Ministry continues to strengthen capacity through trained educators, digital learning support, outreach services, and assistive resources. Further plans are also underway to expand sign language resources and alternative learning formats for visually impaired learners.
The Ministry is working towards a system that promotes inclusion over segregation, enabling children to attend schools closer to home with the right support, while strengthening community participation.
Inclusive education is a fundamental right, and we will continue to strengthen policies, invest in teachers, and expand support systems to ensure no child is left behind.
