Cultivating a Brighter Future: Head Girl Raksha’s Passion for Agriculture and Innovation

For Raksha, agriculture represents more than just a field of study, it is an opportunity to contribute to sustainable development and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Currently serving as the Head Girl of AD Patel College and a Year 13 student in the mixed science stream, Raksha has already demonstrated strong leadership, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. As she prepares for the next chapter of her academic journey, she hopes to continue her studies at the University of Fiji, where she plans to pursue Agriculture Science with aspirations of specializing in Agricultural Engineering.

Raksha says her decision to choose the University of Fiji was influenced by the institution’s supportive atmosphere and commitment to student success.

“I like the sustainable environment at the University of Fiji. The lecturers and staff are very supportive and make thoughtful decisions that benefit their students. It is a place where I believe I can achieve my goals,” she shared.

Behind Raksha’s passion for agriculture is the guidance and encouragement of a teacher who has played an important role in shaping her aspirations. She credits Master Lingam Bishu Atari as one of her greatest inspirations.

“I am very inspired by him because he has been teaching me for many years. His dedication and passion for the subject have motivated me, and I hope to follow in his footsteps,” she said.

Driven by her love for science and her interest in agriculture, Raksha hopes to contribute to the advancement of sustainable farming and agricultural innovation. She believes that education will equip her with the knowledge and skills needed to address future challenges in the sector and help improve communities through modern agricultural practices.

As a student leader, Raksha understands the importance of responsibility, perseverance, and leading by example. These qualities, combined with her academic ambitions and passion for agriculture, position her well for a future where she can make a positive impact on both the agricultural sector and society as a whole.

From Science Student to Future Nurse: Toma Kauyaca’s Journey of Compassion and Purpose

For Toma Kauyaca, nursing is more than just a career choice, it is a calling inspired by family, community, and a genuine desire to help others.

Currently a science student at AD Patel College, Toma is preparing for the next chapter of his educational journey. With a clear vision for his future, he hopes to enroll in the Bachelor of Nursing programme at the University of Fiji, where he can further develop his knowledge and skills in healthcare.

Toma says his decision to pursue tertiary studies at the University of Fiji was influenced by the institution’s positive learning environment and the encouragement he received from its outreach team.

“I’m choosing the University of Fiji because they provide a good learning environment. The lecturers are confident and supportive, and the outreach team that visited our school motivated us to continue our education and pursue our goals,” he shared.

His passion for nursing stems from both personal inspiration and a deep sense of responsibility toward others. Toma credits his mother, along with members of his family and community, for encouraging him to strive for success and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

“My mum inspired me, as well as people in my community and family. We have many teachers in the family, and they encourage me to become the first nurse in our family,” he said.

Beyond family influence, Toma’s love for science has strengthened his desire to enter the healthcare profession. He is motivated by the opportunity to care for people during their most vulnerable moments and provide comfort, support, and treatment to those in need.

“I love science, and I want to become a nurse so I can help sick people and treat them with care,” he explained.

With determination, compassion, and a strong support network behind him, Toma is steadily working towards his dream of becoming a healthcare professional. His journey reflects the values of service, perseverance, and lifelong learning—qualities that will undoubtedly serve him well as he pursues a future in nursing.

Inspired by a desire to continue a family legacy and create new opportunities for those she loves, Vasemaca Vono is determined to use education as a pathway to a brighter future. A Year 13 Arts student at Xavier High School, she is currently studying iTaukei (Vosa Vakaviti), Geography, and Agricultural Science, and is preparing to take the next step in her academic journey at the University of Fiji.

Vasemaca hopes to pursue her studies through the Centre for iTaukei Studies, inspired by a deeply personal family connection. Her cousin, who previously studied at the University of Fiji, was unable to complete her studies. Motivated by her cousin’s experience, Vasemaca is determined to continue where she left off and achieve what was started. She sees this as an opportunity not only to fulfil her own aspirations but also to make a positive difference for her family.

The encouragement and example set by her cousin have played an important role in shaping her educational goals. Through dedication and hard work, Vasemaca hopes to honour that inspiration while creating her own path toward success.

When asked why she chose the University of Fiji, Vasemaca highlighted its close proximity to her home, which allows her to remain connected to her family and community while pursuing her studies. She also appreciates the encouragement and opportunities provided by the university, which have further motivated her to continue her education.

Driven by a genuine desire to help people and make a meaningful difference in his community, Efrem Douglas is working towards a future in medicine. A Year 12 student at Xavier High School studying Pure Science, he hopes to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at the University of Fiji after completing his secondary education.

Efrem’s dream of becoming a doctor is inspired by his desire to care for people and contribute to the wellbeing of his community. He believes that there is a growing need for healthcare professionals, and he wants to be part of the solution by providing medical care to those who need it most. Meet Shushant Singh, a dedicated Year 13 Pure Science student at Nadi Sangam SSKMC who is turning his dreams into reality.

Shushant has set his sights on pursuing an MBBS degree, driven by a deep passion for healthcare and a strong desire to support his family and make them proud. He is determined to become the first person in his family to enter the medical field, breaking new ground through hard work and dedication.

His journey towards higher education became much clearer following a recent University of Fiji outreach visit at his school. Shushant found the session highly informative, using the opportunity to gain crucial details on entry requirements for medicine and to clear up his doubts about pursuing medical school.
