Taking Pacific perspectives to the global stage

The University of Fiji was represented at the Africa-Oxford & Transforming Energy Access (AfOx–TEA) Academic Symposium 2026, held at the University of Oxford, UK.

Dr Ramendra Prasad, Associate Professor and Head of Science at UniFiji’s School of Science and Technology, contributed to discussions on sustainable energy access, climate action, equitable research partnerships and future research priorities.

The symposium brought together more than 150 academics, practitioners and innovators from the UK and Global South, creating opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange and future partnerships.

Dr Prasad’s participation reflects UniFiji’s growing contribution to global conversations on energy and climate, while ensuring Pacific perspectives are part of shaping future solutions.

The University of Fiji hosted an Environmental Awareness and Mangrove Planting Initiative at Saweni Beach, bringing together staff, students and representatives from the Ministry of Forestry to promote environmental responsibility and coastal conservation.

Representatives from the Ministry of Forestry supported the initiative by providing mangrove seedlings and sharing their knowledge on the importance of mangroves in protecting our coastlines, supporting marine ecosystems and building resilience within coastal communities.

The initiative was a meaningful reminder that protecting our environment starts with collective action. Every mangrove planted today contributes to a healthier and more sustainable future.

The University of Fiji extends its appreciation to the Ministry of Forestry for their support and contribution towards this important environmental initiative.

The University of Fiji’s International Symposium on “Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies in the Asia-Pacific Region” held last week had a strong focus on empowering young people to take action to address the waste and climate crisis.

Presenting on behalf of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, Fiji, Thelma Raman, PhD presented on “Empowering Pacific Youth for Climate Action: The Recycling on the Go (ROG) Ambassadors Program in Fiji”. Her presentation discussed the ROG program that was established in 2022 with the goal of embedding sustainability into everyday life by empowering young voices and building resilience through advocacy. It is a youth-targeted early intervention program that empowers the next generation of climate leaders from the ground up and sparks intergenerational action, proving that sustainable habits ripple from schools to families and communities. To date, over 600 students in seven schools have taken on the role of ambassador in their school and the schools have diverted almost 13,000 kg of recyclables from landfill.

The Pacific Recycling Foundation is interested in conducting a longitudinal study of the ROG Ambassador Program and welcomes the opportunity to have a conversation with individuals and institutions who would like to collaborate in this longitudinal study.
Recycling Foundation
