The Confucius Classroom at The University of the South Pacific Lautoka Campus, under the Confucius Institute of the South Pacific, successfully hosted a vibrant International Chinese Language Day outreach event at Tappoo City Lautoka, attracting nearly 400 members of the public.

The event brought Chinese language and culture to life through engaging, hands-on activities. Teachers and volunteers, dressed in traditional Chinese attire, created an immersive cultural experience that drew shoppers and passersby.

Highlights included a calligraphy session led by Ms Yue Wang, where participants learned the basics of Chinese characters, and a mini Chinese song workshop facilitated by Ms Liye Liu, where attendees learned pronunciation and sang simple lyrics. Participants were also rewarded with Chinese-themed souvenirs, including bookmarks, postcards, stamps, and mouse pads.

Ms Xiaoli Lu also introduced the Confucius Classroom’s programs, including language courses, the HSK test, the “Chinese Bridge” competition, and summer camp opportunities in China - sparking strong interest from attendees eager to enrol.

Building on this success, the Confucius Classroom aims to further expand community outreach through partnerships and events that promote language learning and cultural exchange between China and Fiji.

Teresa Ali Graduates with a Post Graduate Certificate in Diplomacy and International Affairs!

“In December 2004, I began my journey at USP - Lautoka Campus. What started as a career path in Human Resources Management and later in Management and Public Administration, up to Postgraduate Diploma level, eventually led me to take a bold step into something completely different.
Last Friday, I graduated with a Post Graduate Certificate in Diplomacy and International Affairs. Choosing this new field challenged me in unexpected ways, but it also opened my eyes to the complexities of global dynamics. It strengthened my skills in negotiation and conflict resolution and deepened my understanding of critical global issues such as climate change and human rights.
It reminded me that growth often comes when we step outside of what is familiar. But this achievement did not come easily.
Last year was one of the most difficult periods of my life. My dad became very ill, and I travelled to New Zealand to be with him. His passing in October 2025 left a deep void, and continuing my studies during that time felt overwhelming. There were moments when giving up would have been easier. But I didn’t.
I kept going because I knew how much this would mean to him. My dad was my mentor and my inspiration, alongside my mum. They always believed in education, in perseverance, and in pushing forward no matter the circumstances. This graduation is not just a personal milestone - it is a tribute to them. It is a reminder that even in the face of loss, we can find strength. That even in our hardest moments, we can keep moving forward. And that sometimes, the greatest achievements are born out of resilience, love, and purpose.
Grateful. Humbled. Proud.”

Congratulations Teresa and to all our graduates of the recent Laucala ceremonies!
